Mrs Frog
Oh and also, do these fish (angel fish) need an aquarium light or not?? They will be in quite a dark room because all my tanks are in one room and its quite dark for the Axolotls. Thanks again.
OscarBoy
yup have a light 4 them as they are tropical but you could proboley get away with it if it was in a light area
evilknieval69
No fish NEEDS a light. Lights are only for plant growth and/or viewing pleasure. If you dont want a light on their tank then dont use one.
OscarBoy
oh i got told it was best to have them lol
michael.qian
lights are mainly for looks, in fact a lot of fish perfer a dark aquarium. But looks a lot better with light, and for plant growth, so normally you would have lights.
Ianab
Yup, if you are growing plants in the tank then you need bright high 'temprature' lights. If you just want to be able to see your fish you can go much simpler and just use a compact flouro lamp or 2 in a normal fitting above the tank. Some fish actually seem to prefer a more subdued light and are out and about more often when the lights are lower. Cheers Ian
me love fishy
I was always told that fish prefer to have a day/night cycle, so I have always used a light, however, if your tank is in a well lit area so it gets alot more light during the day it might be okay. OscarBoy
so the fish like the dark lol
alanmin4304
If you look at a well planted tank you will find that some plants tend to fold up at night and they do this often without regard to what the lights are doing. Mrs Nature is a cleverer lady than us sometimes.
OscarBoy
ok is that because the plants want light 24/7?
alanmin4304
No, they just know when it is night time. I have my lights on longer than most people because I am growing plants and the wattage on the lights is not that high. I also leave pilot lights on at night when growing out fry so that there is always food available 24/7 if they want it. Fish need some light so they can see where they are swimming and where the food is. Light is best from the top as they can get disoriented if the only light is from the side. Ira
Light is best from the top as they can get disoriented if the only light is from the side. They also reorient themselves towards the light from the side. Swim on their side, or vertically, hehe...It's kinda interesting to watch. alanmin4304
You often see it in fish taken from import boxes and put into tanks with subdued lighting not from the top.
