newfish
:-? hi just new at all this (including site). I have a 1mx43x53 tank which has 5 fantails, and 4 danios. My local pet store said this would be fine. ?? Is this ok?? Problem is one of my fantails is now very slow, fins close to body - not a happy fish. I've put him in a small tank for now just incase, worried about the rest. Not sure what to do?? I have a 103f internal filter, air stone, live plants, water changes every week, water tested ok. though Phosphate a little high, pet store said to put in Phos-zorb - which I have done. Help pleaseee I have no idea what I am doing??
Ianab
You dont say how big the fantails are, I'm assuming they are fairly small at the moment? As long as they aren't monsters they will be fine in there for a while. You may have to find new homes for some in the future though, they can grow pretty big. If you have had the tank set up for a while (a month or more) it will have got through it's initial cycling. The water tests being 'OK' indicates your filter is cycled and working properly though. Slightly high phosphate isn't REALLY bad, but it will encourage algae to grow. Your plants will absorb some and water changes should take care of the rest. As for your sick fish... If the water tests fine and the other fish are OK then I wouldn't change anything about the tank. You may just have a sick fish, moving it to a 'hospital' tank for a bit of TLC is probably the best idea. Sometimes fish get sick and die in spite of us doing everything as best we can :-? newfish
Thanks Ian for your reply... Trying to do well by my fishy friends. Fantails are: 4cm (that bring the biggest) little bully too. 5 of those and 4 Danio's which are 2cm? ish thought Fantails would go in a pond when I move which is March - April would they last this long in tank or should I set up a temp pond. Have a old horse trough which would work well..... FinFin (the sickish fish) as he/she is now named  (couldn't help myself) is still holding on........ looking a little happier......??? his top fin is still closed up though..... unlike the other fan's .... still gets around though and eating so maybe that's just him? :-? :-? Hopefully he'll be ok.... oh other thing is he's got one orangeish eye and one silver eye plus the black bit in silver one is larger .... does this mean anything?? or am I over acting? talk about not having a clue  :-? :-?
Ianab
Small goldfish like that will be fine in your tank for a while 6 months time they might be 10cm long though, and the tank will be looking a bit small. But by then they will be fine in a pond. Cheers Ian
