evilknieval69
Just had slight spill in the fishroom (okay so i forgot that the hose was filling my aging barrel and it overflowed HEAPS) anyway, to get the mess cleaned up i had to empty the barrel (after id just filled it up) and get it out of the way.... I turned the pump on and started pumping out the window, then unplugged the heater (which id just turned on) and proceeded to pull it up and out of the water..... "WTF!?!?! wheres my heater gone!!!" Half was missing  The rest was still in the bottom of the barrel..... Must of accidently smashed it some time ago (dont know when) and didnt realise....... So yea, thats NOT what a heater should look like

vippy
Oh bugger. Was it still heating up your water with no problems?
davidb
I can't believe it could look like that without you realising. I cracked mine the usual way- cold water on a hot heater and it made a massive bang, heaps of sparks, lots of smoke and blew the fuse. If the heater was still on without glass you shoulda known bout it

Barrie
if your only doing a 10% change, is it really needed (to heat the barrel) I dont and have had no problems so far bearing in mind that most my tanks get 10 % per day
evilknieval69
Nah it didnt blow up, i just would have accidently cracked it last time i was changing the barrel around or something.... Im not sure. Barrie - I often do bigger water changes than 10%, especially on my cichlid tank and stuff, and i prefer to have heated water as it means i have that freedom to do bigger water changes without stress, and i can also fill up a new tank right there and then, put a cycled filter into it, put a heater in then add fish. I have had to do that many a time
paul_r
when i do water changes i sometimes do over 50% changes with water from the tap, i just try get it as close to tank temperature as possible. Havnt had any fatalities from it yet

Barrie
Smidey Mainly because I want to and as I breed my Killis, I simply over feed at times and want to clean the tanks of excess food. 42 tanks and to feed and water change takes about an hour to an hour and a half twice a day

evilknieval69
Yea i usually do water changes on my killie/breeding tanks everyday, but i do more than 10%, just because i think it makes the tanks nicer, and because most of them dont even have a filter...
