Caper
Ah, didn't know where to post this, so if in wrong area I apologize. Anyway, the only place to buy fish here locally is a department store the only other pet store closed They always get their new fish in on Thursday and they are up for sale immediately, unless you see a tank or 2 that may have do not sell sign on them. If you see a fish that you like, more than likely you only have a day or 2 to get it, or it will be gone. Actually, come to think of it, when I was there yesterday, they still had a lot of fish...which is unusual. ANYWAY, my question is...how long before they should be selling the new fish...I was thinking a week but maybe that's pushing it????? Plus they always have some left over from previous purchases. SpidersWeb
It would be good if stores kept the fish in quarantene for at least 3 weeks, but I've not seen any store (that I know of) that does this which is why its recommended to do it yourself before putting them in the main tank. Generally I don't practice any kind of quarantene process but I only pick fish that look very healthy and alive, and avoid tanks with any sign of disease e.g. white spot. I have had the occasional outbreak however, so its not the best plan to rely on fish behaviour, but improves your chances.
Caryl
I do not like to buy fish that have just come into a shop. I prefer to wait and see how they aclimatise and if they develop white spot or anything first.
Caper
Me either, but like I said, if you don't take them right away, chances they'll be gone. But I haven't bought many fish lately, trying to figure out where I can put my 55 gallon tank. The ones that have lived the longest are the tiger barbs, mind you I have lost some since I started getting them...but these guys are fairing much much better than the others I've had like neons, platties, guppies and a couple of other kinds. jn
Is there an online store that you could buy fish from? Or a Canadian fish forum where you might be able to buy from reputable keepers? There was a guy on here.. umm.. Zoban I think was his username also in Canada (maybe Ontario) I think he'd posted a link to a Canadian forum. Shipping across Canada would obviously not be practical but if you could find some other keepers in the Atlantic or Eastern provinces you might be able to get some couriered? Or you need to go on a shopping holiday somewhere not to far away
Ira
I was going to say that waiting 3 weeks would be redundant as the fish have already JUST gone through a 6 week(IIRC) quarantine. But you're in canuckia, don't think they have quarantines? Anyway, I'd say buy the fish you want quarantine it yourself.
