ryanjury
The maf guy that came out was sweet with us.. We had 2 of them we brought with a community of fish we got off trademe, rang them and they came out a few days later.. The only thing I didn't like was they took my pearl danio's too, but the guy was sweet about it all and said he was sorry and it was policy, he didn't even really inspect my tanks for more (even though he didn't know what an african cichlid was let alone a cichlid..). He contacted me on the day and asked if I could have them bagged ready for him, apparently theres a letter in the mail for compensation from maf but that hasn't arrived yet.. We may have just struck a good maf officer or whatever but they were nice enough to us.. Sorry to hear others have had problems, im just glad I didn't have more danio's! Alan
Then that shows how much they know about the fish breeding of some species then, doesn't it. Do they think the females get impregnated?? If they were doing their job right, the tank that they were in should have been emptied out, gravel sterilized and plants destroyed. IMO those that only had fish confiscated were lucky, even tho it was the wrong action, other than the offending fish. Could have been heaps worse. ryanjury
yeah I was thinking it could have been worse.. The maf guy was trying to be very knowledgeable when he came out saying that the danio's could cross breed (the ge zebra's and pearl's) and carry the gene without showing it.. Either way I thought I was going to have chlorine poured in that tank so was happy that the other fish got to survive
Dixon1990
Its stupid how they are killing the pearl danios. Beacuse i have read that if the zebras breed with the pearls the babies are sterile.

Adrienne
maf phoned me. they said that the spawns from the red ones are no longer just red but all mixes ranging as far as yellows, oranges, pinks etc and that some have been bred with other danios. that may be why. i don't know anything about danios so don't know whats possible and whats not. herefishiefishie
Alan, the guys at this end miss things too. Really when you look at all the other matters these guys & girls are on the look out for. Training someone to be a aquarium fish guru is probably lower down on their list of things to do. Then again, those experienced in fish keeping wouldn't want the job either. I like to see new fish for example. Me, Mal & his off sider laughed every now & then about imagine if one of us had the job. Alan, if you looked hard enough their would of been nearly 1/3 of the fish in his shop not on the allowable import lists. "But" they are not on the noxious list, therefore no dramas. Unless AQIS, {our MAF} had of come in & spotted I think 5-6 species when we were there that are fairly new. Therefore you could get in trouble for as they can be traced. Or if you don't comply, big fine. Mal has had one a few years ago, for zebra plecos. Usually it is done by tip off or similar. I have seen AQIS come in with a couple of pictures of fish, looking through the shop tanks. I can't see how people can blame MAF or whatever. They weren't the ones trying to get them in & bottom line is they aren't allowed. As far as I am concerned, Mal will agree. It's all fun & games, don't get caught. Knowingly or not... stiff shit. Afrikan
MAF made a visit to hubbys work regarding the danios... he was very reasonable and apparently really good to deal with. They didn't have any at all, however had ordered some in when they first came on the list just labelled Red Danio ages ago... of course no one at that stage knew what they were. He asked what tank they were in, had a look and didn't take any of the zebras, leoprards etc, he obviously knew they weren't livebearers.
