Discus questions

Recommended Posts

Am wanting to get some discus. My tank is about 110 litres and is pretty much box like in shape. I've tried looking for some info on the net but don't seem to be having much luck. My questions - is this tank big enough to start with, how many could I get, how much filtration would I need and does it need to be planted.

I'm not intending to buy them until everything is sorted out properly.

Could those of you with experience please give me some information or sites to look through. Thanks

You could get 4 adult discus in there if you have it barebottom (BB) or 5-6 juveniles to grow out. The usual rule is 36L/adult discus. Plants work but you're more open to problems lurking in the substrate so to start I recommend BB. For filtration you want 5x tank volume/hour

Hope this helps

Thanks, another question - sorry about this. Do you buy discus in pairs or do they choose their own mates, also do different types crossbreed and so therefore if I purchased 4 young discus of two different types and put them in the same tank are they likely to pair up with each other or cross match. (Does this make sense??).

They will pair up as they choose, they can & will cross with other colour variants. Then again if you bought 4 juvies to grow up, chances are you could end up with 4 the same sex, 1m/3f etc....

I would advise against buying pairs, for a few reasons. Why would someone sell pairs, bigger discus can be real sooks when moved etc.

Best to buy say 6 juvies, then trade back some when bigger/ paired up..

Frenchy :D
