Dixon1990
Found this on trademe. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=103896552 Is there any plecos that can live in coldwater?
wilson
it will be a Plec that has slowly been ajusted to cold water if the tank is in a warm area they would be fine (room temp arround 22 or more)
coelacanth
no there are no coldwater plecs. Some people stick common plecs and sometimes bristlenoses in goldfish tanks (especially round Chch you see those hired goldfish tanks in supermarkets and so on, and they always have one or two small plecs in them). Bristlenoses will even breed at 20 degrees, but they are better at higher temperatures. Your average goldfish tank however is far too cold. The plec is not happy, will not grow, etc. Don't do it if thats what you were wondering about.

coelacanth
good. I just really hate seeing those hire tanks with their sunken-bellied listless plecs
HummingBird
In my experience Plecs can thrive in coldwater enviroments, even ponds.
coelacanth
thriving and surviving are entirely different things. If they thrived in coldwater there should be dumped plecs breeding all over NZ, over-running the waterways. Not going to happen.
HummingBird
That's true. Well plecs can survive in ponds for certain then. I've known people who've had them in ponds and at a place where I used to work they put one in when it was tiny and it got huge eventually, it was very active. It seemed happy to me. A.PROPHECY
i had one in my pond for about 3months then it got to cold one night and that was the end of him
Alan
That says it all then. Like I say, coldwater fish should be able to survive a winter outside
A.PROPHECY
yep thats the one
wilson
it all depends on what you call cold i went for a walk this morning and i was the olny person in shorts and a t shirt
HummingBird
That says it all then...the fact that I've personally watched a baby pleco grow to 25cm+ over two and a half years in an outdoor pond? Are you even sure yours died from it getting, as you so eloquenty put it, "to cold", A.PROPHECY?
wilson
it all depends on how cold the pond gets in winter in chch ponds get a ice cover on cold days where up north it dosnt drop as much it was -4 here a few nights ago....
Afrikan
I know a guy who had a couple of plecs in his outdoor pond all year round... along with Corys... The pond wasn't hugely deep either... they survived and did rather well... we have the odd ice over here the odd winter to.... winter time they would sit around the huge pond pump to keep warm enough. Summer time the plecs were in their element with the build up of algae.
A.PROPHECY
HummingBird i dont know how cold it was but in the end plecs are tropical fish and they are not ment for cold water so if you take the risk theres always gona be a good chance its gona die
HummingBird
I wouldn't go so far as to call it a "good chance". I know of a few other people who have kept plecs outside all year and haven't had theirs die like yours.
bdspider
Just because you advocate cruelty to a *tropical* fish, doesn't mean you should encourage others to do the same!
Devon
How do you call it cruelty when its surviving and growing all year round?
A.PROPHECY
wel even if does survive all year round whos to say its happy?
coelacanth
I think we should all agree to disagree on this matter. There will always be people who put their own viewpoints ahead of the welfare of the fish, and will keep recommending "coldwater" guppies, plecs, whatever. HummingBird
Indeed. There will always be people lacking in experience but overflowing with opinions.
