DiscusDiva
Is this a silly coincidence or somehing else? I removed the carbon filters out of my aqua one and now the room seems to smell, is it perhaps time to clean out the filters as well?? DiscusDiva
its kind of strange like smelly socks I guess or something a bit mouldy?
Caryl
Have you looked under the bed? You sometimes get an earthy smell from a tank or filter but that is all. I wonder if the room is shut up more now winter is approaching and you need a dehumidifier?
DiscusDiva
it could be completely coincidential, I have a DVS system which airates and takes out the moisture, I went on a super hunt about the lounge and didn't find anything odd ... so removing the carbon shouldn't be letting off any smells fro mthe tank at all then? markoshark
Carbon does remove odor from tanks. However, if your room is smelling that badly, are you sure that your tank ain't leaking somewhere? No fish have jumped out?

davidb
my room smells like that all the time not sure whether its is all the open top tanks or if it is just me(sleeping in there )
jn
I had a nasty case of cyanobacteria (aka Blue-green algae) it was terribly smelly. A musty/mouldy kind of stink. It was growing on my glass in bright green sheets but was also on my plants and stones and initially looked very dark and 'goopy' and as it progressed got brighter green. Could that be it? Adrienne
The only time I notice smells in our house is when I return from holiday and the kids have overfed the fish or there is a dead fish in the tank. Have a good check.
sharn
Not feeding any shrimp pellets or similar are you? They can make the water stink *really* badly. If it is the tank itself that is stinking this is one of the reasons why carbon can be a problem IMO- an unusual smell coming from a tank is something you would want to rectify (incase there is an underlying problem) not cover up.
