Milet
Hi all, Just looking at all my options before setting up my brackish tank. Is there any natives that will live in a Brackish tank?? Maybe small yellow-eye mullet, whitebait etc? Many thanks
snookie
you may have problems with the temp , but may work , also puffers may attack them good fish to cycle brackish tank is mollies (they love it) and thrive
Milet
Yeah was thinking about the temp being the major problem. Lol i doubt my puffers would attack anything. They are scared of everything
davidb
yellow eyed mullets won't work i don't think coz they feed on about 1kg of silt per day feeding on micro-organisms etc and you would have trouble feeding thm enough to keep them happy. Whitebait wouldn't work coz the couldn't stand the temp.

Milet
Think kahawai will get too big and jump lots?? What bout spotties or some sort of rockpool fish
markoshark
When they get too big, eat them Tasty Spotties / sprats should be good, i'd advise against rockcod because they will probably competete for hidey holes with the puffers. davidb
live crabs are messy puffer food- they will scatter them throughout the tank.

markoshark
a school of 2-3 cm sprats would be pretty awesome Find a local wharf and get a baitcatcher. Instant fish
Milet
Nothing to do with natives but, what brackish algae eaters are there?
davidb
don't bumblebee gobies eat algae?
Milet
What sort of Algae eater would work in a brackish tank set up? If you are looking for something that will behave like a plecostomus does in freshwater tanks, then I'm afraid you are out of luck. There is an altenative, though. One of the best algae eating fish in brackish water is the common sleeper gobie (Dormiator maculatus). These fish will eat most types of soft algae that grow in the aquarium. Unfortunately, they are rater docile, and tend to be abused by the "typical" brackish fish such as scats, puffers, and monos. Better tankmates would be mollies, rainbows, or other gobies. There really is no algae eater that will work with the more aggressive brackish fish.
alanmin4304
I have kept baby flounder in salt and freshwater so they should do brackish if aclimatised slowly.
