whats the difference between a Panaque and a pleco ?

Hope this makes sense.

To quote from a popular online website "Plecostomus, pleco, or plec is a general name for a type of freshwater tropical Central and South American fish belonging to the family Loricariidae."

The loricarids (also called suckermouth catfish) are generally elongate with a body covered in plates (except the belly), giving them an armoured appearance. There are over 600 species and a number are relatively common in aquariums; eg. common and redspot plecos, common bristlenose, whiptails, etc. The name may have originated from the common Plecostomus's scientifc name of Hypostomus plecostomus.

There are a number of genera (the first part of the scientific name) in the family including Hypostomus (common pleco is a species in this genus), Glyptoperichthys (redspot is one of these), Ancistrus (bristlenose), Panaques (royal plec and flash plec), etc.

yeah.. what Flatfish said.

Pleco is a generic name for the Loricariidae family of catfish.. there are hundreds of them.

The Panaques are a sub family of the Loricariidae.

So all Panaques are 'plecos', but not all plecos are panaques... OK ?

Cheers

sort of makes sense now ,cheers :D

Yeah Ian explained it better.

There are 100s of species of plecs (or suckermouth catfish or Loracarids), of which Panaques are one sort, and there are a number of different species/types of Panaques.

So as Ian said all Panaques are plecs but not all plecs are Panaques.

Yeah as above.

Panaques sre also woodeaters and will get big. their teeth srround their mouth, 4 lines that dont quite join to form a diamond shape . Real wide head and generally a high crown. My L191(Royal) is still growing at 16cm, have also seen L090(papas) around but would love to know if anyone has L027 Xingu here.

L204(flash), L104(clown), and L226( changae) are also labelled here as panaques as they are woodeaters, but they are actually Panagolus or 'mini panaque" yet another Pleco genus.

Maybe sometimes its just easier to call them plecs.

Hey Ilah

No unfortunately, waiting for the day that I wander in a LFS and see one waiting for me. Should be no reason why they can't be here, except for the eventual price tag I guess. I have the L191 Royal which I love, like half a watermelon sitting on the bottom of the tank.

nope, the name panagolus was introduced and veto within 12 months which is a shame cuz i really liked the idea of having a separate category for dwarf panaques.

Panaqolus was just a name to separate the size different sort of a sub family not an different genus, either way the term is no longer accepted
