Along with a couple of baby eels, few shrimp, cockabully etc. Dammed freshwater crays would escape within 5 hours. Escape through anything. We had about a 10cm lip on the tank (40cm high), and an airline going above the tank vertically, suspended on cotton. Little buggers could scale that, and vanish. It is a known fact, that a vast majority of fishkeepers in NZ ... possibly thousands... (both coldwater and otherwise).. are unaware that this site even exists.. and we get people arriving almost daily that have kept fish in NZ for decades, that are completely unaware that there was a collection of fish enthusiasts so close to their fingertips... or that they had access to such a vast library of knowledge so close to home on the Internet.. so it would be "very" hard to put an accurate figure on it. There are also many hundreds that refuse to .. (or can't).. join this or any other site.. or even join a club.. so this is another aspect. Then there are the specialised breeders that we never hear of or see.. that breed all manner of tropicals and fancy goldfish.. and the "loners" that just like to do it their way... which are again numbers that can't be accounted for... and we have the ones that keep fish.. but don't have a computer.. or access to one. We have .. (had).. possibly twenty or thirty (or more).. regular marine keepers... but let's face it.. there are many more than that in NZ. Think about your own situation.... How long have you kept fish for...? Now think about when you first discovered this site..? Often the two can be years apart.. but word gets around faster these days Bill. imsweet Posted April 11, 2007 Report Share Posted April 11, 2007 I have a 70ltr, 90ltr, 120ltr with goldies, shubs, 8 x apple snails and a fantail in the lounge and a 20ltr with a couple WCMM and 2 x tiny black moores (spawned jan). Outside i have 3 ponds with goldies and shubs that bred last season. And just cleaned out another yesterday to have as a planted pond with lillies, oxygenators and some sort of floating plant. Stella Posted April 11, 2007 Report Share Posted April 11, 2007 I have natives (inanga, banded and giant kokopu, various bullies and a few crays) A chiller is useful but there are other ways of chilling a tank. It is fairly critical for most natives to have something keeping the temperature down. A really well-fitting lid is definitely needed for all species of natives. Even the bottom dwelling bullies wind up on the wrong side of the glass far too easily (albeit largely accidentally, the other species are hell bent on escaping). The fancy goldfish have such gorgeous little personalities Incidentally, we've had our fish for about 6 months and I've just discoverd this site accidentally. What a lucky accident!
