Sue Fleet Posted March 17, 2007 Report Share Posted March 17, 2007 WA&WGS is the oldest fish keepers club in New Zealand, starting life on 24 October 1933. Its members met in each others homes. By 1938 it had become the New Zealand Aquarium & Water Garden Society and the membership stood at 42. As the name implies it now had members throughout the country. In July 1941 the Christchurch members of NZAWGS formed a branch. By 1948 the membership of the club had increased to 617. The setting up of branches of the NZAWGS continued and in 1952 it was proposed to set up the New Zealand Federation and NZAWGS became the Wellington Aquarium & Water Garden Society again. In 1983 it celebrated its 50th Jubilee and now the story moves on. In October 2008 the club will be 75 – why not come along to a club meeting and see what has kept this club going for so long. The club meets every third Wednesday at Union Church Hall Lounge (cnr of Kenya & Crofton Rds. Ngaio) The meetings start at 8.00pm. There is a raffle fund raiser run every month, a light supper and subject discussions, guest speakers and quiz nights as per our yearly programme. Followed by a shortened meeting, there will be a fish competition, best fish own breeding. Also the usual Raffle. On 18 April 2007 we will be having a guest speaker, who will come along to talk about the goldfish he is breeding and to hopefully answer your questions. There will also be a competition, young fish own breeding. Raffle too. On 16 May 2007 we will be having our annual Quiz Night, for the last few years we have challenged Kapi-Mana to come along and have some fun. We have a fun / novelty competition on the fishy theme. As usual we have a raffle and an extra special guest, Warren the FNZAS President will be stopping by to say hello.
