brishe
About two months ago, i purchased 3 golden bristlenose babies from a breeder, They did really well for the first week then they stopped eating got air bubble type things under their bellies and died. I had them in an isolation tank within the community tank to stop them being eaten by other fish. They were only 2cms. I was advised by a lfs to only feed every other day, since found out that they need food constantly and i didnt have any driftwood, the water levels were good. I am picking up two more next week and i have set up a special tank to raise them up in, is there any thing else that i need to do?, or does anyone no what could of caused the air bubbles? I really dont want these to die.

SpidersWeb
Bristlenose dont jump. Most important thing is good water quality. Use a sponger filter or similar, preferably one that has been cycled in another tank already. If thats not available, use some gravel from an already established tank to help seed the new one. Set the temp at around 28C. I raised mine at 30-32C but 28C is a safer bet. Feed daily one slice of courgette and the occasional algae tablet. Make sure to have wood as well. To feed courgette you need to weight it down, plant weights work, I used to use old keys and I've seen people use teaspoons etc I did this and got really good growth with my GBAs. Make sure the water is clean, if in doubt, do a partial water change.
evilknieval69
Someone here a little while ago (read months) said that they had baby bristlenose jump out of a breeding trap. I personally havent experienced BN jumping, and i always keep my babys in a breeding trap or net breeder.... Spidersweb has pretty much covered everything you need to know. I always feed my babys novo-bits aswell but they dont need them... Courgette or cucumber, plus pleco tablets will do them fine...
herefishiefishie
The bloat could of been caused by incorrect diet. What were you feeding them? Frenchy
carla
Bristlenose dont jump. No, but they "walk" out of their tank quite easily! They do that by sucking upwards and can escape quite easily out of a tank if the gap in the top glass is wide enough! I have watched babies that I had in a bucket with about 10cm of water in the bottom, reach a considerable height until they decided to let go and fall back! In a nearly full bucket they would have gone over the top and onto the floor!
GZ_Loach
wish id known that before i got mine, lost 2 of them that way
Afrikan
Yeap they most certainly can suction their way up the tank glass that's for sure, someone I know lost two that way... found them over the back of the tank stand, crispyfied a few months later... there was a sufficient gap for them to slither over the top... Adrienne
Maybe thats where some of mine have gone to. I couldn't work out how they had disappeared (no carcass floating)!
Whiskas
My adult male will sometimes swim quickly straight up the side of the tank and appear to jump out of the water Luckily he has never gone through the gap! Its quite funny and sometimes gives me a fright, esp when I am feeding or cleaning out with the top off.
Adrienne
Searched around the back of my tank today (the one where the bristlenoses disappeared from) and there were two crispy bodies. At least I now know what happened to them.
brishe
The bloat could of been caused by incorrect diet. What were you feeding them? Frenchy I was feeding algae wafers, have since learnt that they need constant food and wood, was told by pet shop to only feed every other day and to take away uneaten food after 2hours. brishe
I have had my 18 baby bristlenoses now for a week and 2 goldens. They appear to be doing really well, the filter is playing up though and not clearing the tank so i may have to invest in a better one, has anyone had anything to do with jebo super mini filters Model 501?? the cartridges only last a week then i get overflow, so now i have just got some filter medium ceramic tubes and have replaced the cartridge with filter wool. I will see how that goes, any other ideas would be great.
