Giant Gourami

Featured Replies

Hi i was wondering if anyone here new where to get a young giant gourami from in Christchurch?I saw this 40cm one in a chinese restaurant in a huge tank and it was the most amzing thing ive ever seen. Thanks

Before considering getting one, ask yourself what are you going to do when it gets up to a 600mm long, tank buster.

Then go back to the shop and admire theirs.

Another fish that shouldn't IMO be imported for obvious reasons.

i personally wouldnt keep one as they get so large.

i have only seen 2 large ones in my life and were both in tanks well over 1000 liters.

i would never do it duse to the size... its the same with pacu... i love the fish but i know i cant give them what they need

but thats just me

hey,the guy i bought my 6ft tank from had one for sale, but not sure if he still does. Cant remember his name (Cameron??) but if i recall correctly he runs sweet water aquatics. That chinese restaurant wouldnt hapeend to be the one off lincoln rd? Cuz I think he maintains them..

they are nice fish Dixon but they get very big maybe you could get one of its smaller cousins maybe some kissing gourami of sunset gourami

i have 3 dwarf gourami and there very nice :)

where abouts in christchurch do you come from?

I was thinking bout getting pearl gouramies But thought a bigger fish would be better as i plan on getting a huge tank later on.Anyone know how fast giant gouramies grow?or how big pearl gouramies get?

giant gouramis grow fast in a good enviroment

i couldnt find pearl gourami on the site for you maybe they have it ubder a different name

a good site to look up if your not sure on fish is http://www.fishindex.com/library/ it gives info and pictures of fish ive found it very helpfull

giant gauramis grow at a reasonable rate but if you are wanting something like the one in that restaurant.. years?? lol have you ever thought of oscars?? they get quite big and very interesting fishes :)

6 + 24 at perhaps

if you are planning (and its a total definate cause if it goes down the plug hole chances are you wont be able to get rid of it or move it when it gets larger) to get a tank at least 8x3 (then you have the whole deal of filtration, flooring, stands, heating etc) then a giant gourami *may* be worth looking at. IMO they require more financial commitment than most other animals, they require large tanks (lost of $$), lots of food and can live for 30+ years :o once they get to full size moving is not an easy task and it causes them considerable stress. consider them a very long term commitment. they do however make excellent pets but a little bit of cash must be sacraficed to make them a nice home

if not oscars are an awesome smaller fish, they max out at 12-14" on average. i love mine to bits, he is definatly part of the family. mine has his favourite things and things he hates with a vengance (a white teddy bear, terracotta pot, my slipper)

There's the giant gourami that is small and the giant goramy which is huge. Or some variation of it. The little 6" giant gourami is marketing BS, it's not giant, just bigger than your average gourami.
