supasi
does anyone know how to prevent this other than reducing airflow to filter as this also reduces water flow. Ive just set up another tank(lol) and was going to use spongee as it will be bb tank, but the noise is unbearable. cheers simon
antwan
Do yours gurgle for a long time after being set-up? With my sponge filters I found they only made a lot of noise when the outlet was above the water's surface or they had recently been set-up (became more and more silent over about a week or so). You could just try raising the water level or lowering them in the tank and see what happens.

antwan
Cool, I'd say give it a few days to a week, and if it doesn't quieten down, try something else. Good luck with breeding.
Caryl
Try a few gentle whacks on it. Sounds like there may be trapped air. They can gurgle a bit for a while when first set up until the trapped air escapes.
Freakyfish
What type of sponge filter is it I have a few diff types in the shop and with them i cut the core out of them and add airline with a airtstone attached I found the larger bubbles coming straight from eithert the end of the airline or the end of the pipe made the most noise simple adjustment and perfect
SpidersWeb
With the correct air flow they wont make any noise. They do not flow much water either, just the smallest amount, which is why they are used for fry. For higher turnover, e.g. larger fry, I use a HOB filter with a sponge filter jambed over the intake. Use a line crimp/tap/air valve to decrease air. If it's the model I'm thinking of, make sure the exit is half out of the water, and half in the water. Keep turning down the bubbles until just as the noise stops.

ryanjury
the sponge filters with airstones are quieter.. and also if you've placed the column of air directly up against the glass its noisier ive found..
Caryl
I misread the whole thing. I was referring to a HOB, not sponge filter. Oops
