penguinleo
I was just wondering...why can we not get any types of shrimps into New Zealand? We only seem to have the cold water species. :-? Is it just because of DOC or fears of diseases or mass deaths? Curious...
alextret
Malasian river schrimp is in NZ, but never made it into acquarium trade. They just grow it for food. It is hot water.
fishboi
penguinleo its just the same reason why we dont get a lot of things in NZ. for them [DOC/MAF] if its not already in the country then lets not have them at all as its one thing less to worry about. alextret u must be talking about Prawn park in Taupo. i recommended that place its great fun even if u dont like eating prawns/shrimps. carla
shiuh, u can get them live now but u have to catch them ur self great fun too. And an employee is right beside you and "helps" you to put them from the hook straight onto ice where they die almost instantly
Skoll
Interestingly enough I popped down to the local stream here in Lower Hutt, and lo and behold scooped up four shrimps in the first likely 1 metre stretch of shore I looked at. So plenty of these around. They seem happy enough in an unheated tank inside with a few leopard fish. Anyone have any idea what sort of temperatures they will be comfortable in? Obviously they couldn't be kept too cold indoors in NZ, but I'm keen on avoiding cooking them if I can help it. They pick away quite happily on algae wafers and missed bits of flake. Gavin.... :)
davidb
they won;t be fussed with higher temps. I don't think they would like being in a tropical tank but they will be fine and dandy in any tank without a heater
Aaron_fish_mad_guy
They can be acclimatised to higher temps. into the mid 20s s l o w l y , week by week a degree at a time. Been there done that.
