DIY canister filter!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi, has anyone ever seen, heard about, or made a DIY canister filter.

Do you think it would be possible,I mean you could use a large peice of pvc wiuth end caps and use an external pump.

or

You could use4 peices of smaller pipe so the syphoned water went first into the first pipe at the top then into the second then into the third and then into the fourth (these chalmbers would be filled with media) you would then put the 4 pipes in a large pipe which is about 20cm longer than the set of 4 pipes so that there would be a void space at the bottom for a submersible pump which would pump the water back to the tank.

Its got to be cheaper than a eheim or fluval canister

Plus yuou could add heater if you wanted

Hey Dude...

Yes anything is possible, the one thing you have overlooked is 'reliability' or more accuratly "peace of mind". Please dont get me wrong... I am not hassling your DIY ability! :D

Have a hunt around, especially trademe, I am sure you will find a 2nd hand cannister. If your not sure its 100% OK, spend a couple of $$ on kits to replace seals, impellors, and shafts and you can have a filter as good as new!

Heres a couple of searches for you:

keyword: eheim

and here is a result Ehiem 2213

Woah... should have looked down the page :o

check this one

Classic case in point.... Buy now $120, media will set you back about 60-100, depending if you go for 'genuine' eheim, or other brand substrate.

Off the top of my head this filter will go for "about" $400, if not more, in the shop. And i think you would get most people to agree that eheim is one of the best brands of gear around (and no i am not slagging off the other brands - gee I am polite eh ? :D )

HTH

[EDIT]

And its for sale in CHCH!!! bonus!!!

There was a guy who posted here a couple of years ago that that made one from a ssteel beer keg or some thing similar. I think its a great idea, not sure you would save much $ but could end up with a far bigger/better filter. There are plently of options for cheap filter media, you could just fill it with gravel if you wanted to.

Have you priced up the bits you're wanting? They're not cheap especially in the sizes you're aiming for, if you can find them.

If you're wanting cheap you might be better off going for something like a bucket with a screw on lid, punch a couple holes for hoses in it and it should work fine. But proper PVC piping and bits like you're wanting will be expensive.
