HelifaxNZ
Hi folks, I haven't posted anything in the freshwater before. Mostly in the Saltwater forum, but here's a shot of my tank as of last night. This plant is flowering in my tank! Can anyone let me know whether it is safe? It does look quite cool in there. Many thanks
antwan
Yea, it's fine, it means you've got great conditions for your plants, well done! Nice looking tank you've got there.
HelifaxNZ
Woo hoo... good to know. My pump broke down for a week and had no filtering so now it's been 2 weeks with it back on and I bought a UV steriliser and it has helped in making the water crystal clear. Cheers. Caryl
Looking good. Did it flower underwater?
HelifaxNZ
Yes, sure did, that's why I was a bit worried as I've never seen an aquatic plant flower underwater. Looks like a mini lily. Just in time for Xmas!
Alan
Isn't that a Peace Lily?? Alan
jude
I was thinking the same Alan. They are sold as aquatic plants but don't usually last for long. I didn't think they'd flower underwater but it looks great. Cheers Jude
antwan
Yip, anubias flowers all the time under water when given good conditions
alanmin4304
A lot of the Echinodorus sp. flower under water as well but I would keep an eye on that plant as they are not realy aquatic plants and it may start to rot in a few weeks. IOU1
Isn't it an anubis? A underwater plant? :-?
HelifaxNZ
I did buy it from HFF as an aquatic plant so I expect it to be fine.
Caryl
A lot of plants are sold as 'aquatic' when in fact they are not.
alanmin4304
I think it is a peace lily and would do better on your window ledge in a pot.
antwan
Is peace lily another name for anubias? Because I'd strongly say that that is anubias, that's what the plant looks like when it flowers anyway.
Insect Direct
Whatever it is Id keep an eye on it as dont some plants flower in a bid to try reproduce before they turn there toes up? I maybe wrong its probably the opposite and very happy in your tank hence why its fowering, either way it looks kool!
jude
I thought it was a peace lily at first but the leaves don't seem right for that. How tall is it? If its not too tall it could well be an anubias Cheers Jude
antwan
I just did a google search on peace lily's, it's definitely not that, the leaves are completely different. If you do a google search for anubias nana you will see the flowers do look similar, but it's the leaf shape that gives it away.
alanmin4304
The plant is too big to be anubius nana
alanmin4304
I think the other plants are Anubius are they not?
HelifaxNZ
I'm sure they were selling them as anubias. I've had two of these for well over 8 months, and recently purchased another one thinking it was another plant. They're not that big in size. Probably around two fists size. HelifaxNZ
If you have a look at my full tank pic, this flower is from the plant on the front right. The front centre plant is the same as the flowering one, but is bigger in size. The one on the left is the new one I bought with the really tall plant at the centre back. Caryl
A peace lily is Spatiphyllum wallisii or Borneo Sword. It may be Anubias barteri? I have a peace lily in my bathroom and its leaves seem longer and thinner than that pictured here.
HelifaxNZ
Here's a close up shot of the flower... also I thought I would show a pic of my two male bristlenoses who have been working very hard lately
