Whose eggs are these?

Hi all. i wasn't sure where to put this thread but i'm hoping breeders will recognise my description. tonight i have noticed on the grey box of our filter pipe lots and lots of little yellow almost see through "eggs". what made me notice was my angels picking them off but alot of the eggs are so stuck on there that the angels can't seem to get them off, no matter how hard they try. i have 2 yellow apple snails in my tank. could they have put them there? as well as the angels i have neons, guppies, platies, corydoras, a plec, black phantoms and 1 male siamese fighter. any info about the snalis would be appreciated or if these "eggs" are abnormal please let me know.

Thanks in advance

Hi there ludimac

my guess is that the angels are tending their young. The positioning is fairly common for angels, and anything else in the tank would more than likely scattered the eggs all over the place.

Also the picking that you mentioned is probably them half fanning the eggs but also picking out any that seem to be fungusing.

Of course the other option is that if they are first time parents then they will more than likely eat them.( not saying they will, but be prepared for it.

The parents may look after the fry, don't count on it, they usually do eat them the first couple of times, but they will get the hang of it.

Your other fish will try to eat the fry if they get the chance, often tho the parents won't let others near.

not sure of the exact time frame till they hatch but expect to wait a couple of days at least.

if you can slide a divider into the tank and seperate the angels from the rest of this fish in the tank, this will give them a better chance at raising the young.

Also do not fret if you can't find the young once they hatch as some parents will move the young around the tank.

All The best with the first spawn.

sigh...it was exciting while it lasted. it has been a few hours since i found the eggs and they are all gone. the parents were very attentive and i saw then fanning the eggs but now they're all gone. just wasn't their time i guess. well at least now i know what to look for. thanks Ballistic and fishboi for your help.

Better luck next time ludimac, but at least it looks like you have a pair and the reason I say looks like is that i once had angel eggs only to find out they were both female, so the eggs weren't being fertilised)

As Alan has said try hanging a peice of slate in the tank for them, although this works for some it never did for me, they always laid elsewhere and usually on something that wasn't easily removed :D

If you feed them up on things like bloodworms and live foods they will be in good condition next time they spawn.

All the best with the breeding

thanks alan and ballistic. i will try the slate in the tank. i just have another question. i have 3 angels in the tank and it seems the 2 that have paired up are harrasing the third. can he look after himself or should i be worried? i would hate them to damage him.

they may tend to pick on the 3rd a little, as he will try to be part of the group and they will see him as a threat and constantly harass him keeping him away from the breeding site.

Keep an eye on them as the 3rd may learn to steer clear of the other two.

Hi Ludimac,

I wish you all the best with your next batch. I have had two batches so far, first eaten as eggs, and second eaten as free-swimming fry - Things I will do differently next time - make sure nitrates are lower as they come into breeding condition coz feeding the fry pollutes the tank - and take out tank mates to another tank asap.

You ask about three angels - I had a pair and a third angel - the third angel killed the male of the pair, and subsequently died himself about a week later - injuries to his swim bladder from the fighting I think - not sure. I would agree with other advice about having just your pair in the tank.

Cheers, Sam
