farmchick
We have an 8 and 1/2 foot tank at home thats just screaming out to be set up but we need to change some stuff first Is there anyone in the west auckland area that could please please please help? What we need is a couple of sump holes filled and some bracing on the top of the tank. It has a divider in the middle of the tank effectively making it 2 tanks that we would like removed. We have heaps of glass for the top bracing. Is there anybody out there that could give us a hand as we dont really know what to do  Thanks heaps

Fishman
How thick is the glass? if its 10mm or less I wont remove the partition. And why do you want to get rid of the sump holes? you need a decent filtration to run that size tank and sump is the way to do it.
farmchick
Im pretty sure its 12mm. We have 2 cannister filters to run in it (I cant remember lph) The bracing in the middle of the tank goes right to the top which splits the tank and the silicone is knackered so I dont think its doing much in the way of support. If there was enough top bracing would this provide the same level of support?
Wok
what about leaving the centre divider and just cut a large hole in it? that would stop the need for bracing on top of the tank... be a good talking point as well As for the sump holes. Make use of them... use one of your 3ft or 4ft tank as a sump and then use your 2 canister filters to take the water back up into the main tank. That way you get extra filtration. (which can only be good)
farmchick
thanks all. I think the only reason behind getting the holes filled is that we dont know anything about running a sump tank  How do they work?
Rockerpeller
http://www.fishtankguy.com/setup.php just a snippet taken from the above site Sump Filters - used for large and more complex aquarium setups . Use a sump filter when needing a very large biological filtration system. Water trickles out of your tank and over media where bacteria is farmed for the purpose of breaking down the ammonia and nitrites in your aquarium. A large sponge prefilter catches the big debris before it enters the sump. These are the most expensive forms of filtration but also the most effective for large aquatic environments. These filters are heavily used on large saltwater systems and reef tanks.

Haha jokes, sounds like it will be a sweet tank once setup... But yea i agree with the others, keep the holes and use a sump on it!! It gives more media space, and more litreage... What kind of geos do you have for it? Surunimensis?? Brasiliensis?? Geos are cool. I got 7 baby brasiliensis the other day and they are sooo cool
farmchick
weve got the surinemensis. they are very cool. they hold their own in the tank but arent aggressive at all. We can get a few more once the monster tank is up and running
Wok
I don't think setting up a sump is any more expensive than buying a big canister filter. simple to setup and use as well. all your heaters could go in the sump so you don't have any showing in your main tank. I have seen an 8ft tank with a 3ft sump in it and it works fine.
evilknieval69
Yea i agree with wok, externals wont be any cheaper than a sump, expecialy since you already have the 3 and 4 foot tanks that you could use, and sumps can handle a bigger boiload... They are pretty simple to setup and use once you get it going... Surunimensis!!! They are my favourite geo, and i would realy like some, but i got a GOOD deal on brasiliensis so got them instead
farmchick
Thanks all. The jags are 2 males who seem to get picked on by everyone else  Wimps. The others are digging though. We had a bare bottom 4ft the other day with a whole heap of gravel up the sides The clown loach is funny, no-one else is allowed in his drainpipe (not that anyone can fit when hes in it) he is huge, I think the only reason he comes out is when everyone spits gravel on him. I will try and get a pic of him The tank is about 450 high by 550 wide (or is it the other way around?) and the filters are 1200 lph (I think). Both the 3fts are complete with stands and hoods so its not really an option to use them as a sump tank
ryanjury
Would this be big enough?? http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/sump-f ... 16677.html
farmchick
Thanks Ryan. I will check with the sister tonight and see how much she has to spend.
ryanjury
lol yeah I was asking the powers that be if it would be big enough for your tank presumably 3500lph is better than 2 x 1200 external's..
farmchick
hehe, its a 90 year+ old villa with you guessed it......................Wooden floors  Some major bracing work is needed for the floor too but we have some one organised for that
