Matthew
I have just been into our local chinese shop. They have an eight foot tank, and inside they had a silver arowana of approximately 2 foot plus length ( possibly even three foot). Unfortunately one night recently it leapt out of the tank and is now in fish heaven (or on the menu). It's always sad to hear of such a majestic fish, and one of many years, dying. That's why I wanted to share with everyone so we could all send our sympathy to the fish owner.
Alan
Should have had a decent lid on the tank. No sympathy here. Sorry for the fish tho.
Pegasus
now in fish heaven (or on the menu). Or he/she could be gleefully counting the extra cash under his/her bed each night Not cheap fish, and they could have had an offer they couldn't refuse Either way... It's a shame about the fish, but if it 'did' get out, he/she has only themselves to blame, but then I suppose we all make mistakes in times of haste, which may have been the case. Caryl
How long had it been there Matthew? Arowanas are well known for jumping and need really good lids but I would have thought if they had had it a long time they would know that. These things happen unfortunately. Perhaps it went after a cat! I personally don't like to see large fish like this kept in aquariums as I think it is cruel but I bet it attracted custom. Warren
I have sympathy. Alan, I know of several people who have lost large Arowana's despite having very good covers on the tank. They are natural jumpers, its how they catch their food if its not already in the river. One of my friends recently came home to smashed 6mm glass inside the tank and Arowana lying on the floor. It only takes an insect to land on the cover glass and they will have a go at it. This was a very big fish and it managed to break the glass. Matthew
apparently the fish had jumped out before, but they were able to rescue it before it dehydrated. They always have there lids in place, so I imagine that the arowana jumped through that.
Caryl
I have read stories about arowanas smashing their way through very thick glass weighted down with heavy objects.
spent
The poor beast. I agree with Caryl, even an 8ft tank would be cramped for an arowana approaching 3ft.
