Southerrrngirrl
Ok I'm going to try to describe this as best I can. The other day while gazing in to my tank I noticed one of my silvertips had a strange reddish/white lump type thing on his tail in front of the fin. As it turned, it was noticeable on the other side of his body as well in the same place. He seems to be swimming and eating happily and no other fish have any signs of this. There have been no deaths since setting up of the new tank several months ago. Last time new fish were added was about 3-4 weeks ago. Water parameters are fine, acceptable level nitrates, 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia. The tank is due for a water change which I'll be doing tonight. Any ideas what this "lump" might be?? Thanks
Caryl
I assume you mean the lump is large enough to show on both sides of the body, and it is the one lump? I know golfdish can get carp pox, which is like the wart virus in humans. This forms white lumps on the fish. Looks ugly but is harmless. Don't know if other fish can get this. In the tetra's case, I would wonder about it having had a foreign body stuck in the scales, which has got infected, or maybe a cancerous type tumour. Fish do get these and they are incurable. Doesn't spread to other fish either.
Southerrrngirrl
Thank Caryl. Yeah, I guess its like that. I assume it is the one lump It doesn't look good, whatever it is. I visited my LFS after posting and asked them about it. They said without seeing they can't really identify what it is, they said it does sound like an infection or parasite. They suggested trying some melafix anyway, then if that doesn't work some furan. Off to set up a quarantine tank for the little guy (which I have been meaning to do for a while anyway)
Caryl
I really hate people suggesting you throw meds in a tank without knowing what the problem is. You do not treat humans that way, nor should you do it to fish. Southerrrngirrl
I don't know what else to do. Its either that or wait til the weekend, try to catch the little bugger and take him in to the LFS.
Caryl
If a fish is still eating well and behaving normally I prefer to leave them alone.
PENEJANE
Caryl all I can say is thats the same excuse anyone would get from the only LFS down here. Thats why I am setting up my own shop to try and help educate people about fish keeping as well as I can. I to don't worry about adding meds untill they show signs that really require it. If I see a fish that is looking a little off I give it a salt bath for 10-30 mins depending on the fish then put it back into the tank in which it came from. If no other fish look like they are unhealthy then I leave it till the next day and do another salt bath if necessary. Yes I know that its hard to digonse any problem without seeing it first but at the same time netting and transporting the fish can cause excess stress that is totaly unnecessary. Hope what ever it is either goes away or comes right on its own. Cheers
Southerrrngirrl
Just an update on this: The lump eventually disappeared, along with the top fin of the tail, which I was a bit worried about. But now, it would appear the tail is growing back! Is this possible??

Southerrrngirrl
Thanks Caryl, it never occurred to me that it might grow back!
