subflex
Got my first BTA last night. My maroon clown was very happy to say the least and was all over it before it had even opened in the tank. Went to bed with a nagging feeling after I remembered reading about people losing their anemonies in their streams/powerheads, but I thouhgt "I'll sort something out for it in the weekend, what could possible go wrong?". First thing I saw this morning was the base of the anemone stuck firmly in the grill of the stream, eveything else was very finely diced and floating around the tank. I know, what a knob! Anyway I was wondering what people have done to eliminate or lessen the risk of this happening. I was thinking of using cable ties to hold some foam around the intake but was thinking that this may restrict the streams intake and put pressure on it. Otherwise assembling some kind of acrylic cover/box I was thinking may be the go.
Ira
Get rid of that POS stream and get a Seio.
land_lubber
Get rid of that POS stream and get a Seio. I second that. I don't know why alot of people bag Seio it puts out a pretty good current.
puttputt
I second that. I don't know why alot of people bag Seio it puts out a pretty good current. if you say so, and if the flow is so good, how is that going to help anenomes from get stuck in it?? JDM
i had 3 seio 1100s in my tank, removed them and put in one stream 6100, the seios flow rating is very misleading, at a guess i would say the stream is half as powerful again. and thats 1 compared to 3! i have seen photos of people using a open weave filter gauze as a cover for the stream, would be fine for a few weeks untill the anemonie gets settled, then remove the gauze and enjoy. suphew
To answer your question subflex, you just need to turn off the streams for a while until the BTA attaches to something, this normally doesn't take long, a day or so at most. The only problems people have had other than this is when there pumps or streams are too close to the rock work and the anenome has wandered into it. Also some times if they are very unhappy they might detach and float round, but if this happens your anenome probably has bigger problems than getting stucked into the pump. Also don't write off your anenome, if you haven't already removed it from the tank and gotten rid of it there is a ok chance that it will survive, just keep a very close eye on it incase it does die and starts to rot in your tank, and keep the pump off until it attaches. subflex
Removing the streams isn't something I was considering and I'd be surprised if I get that desperate. Gauze sounds like it could be good, only problem i see is the anemone would still be pulled hard against gauze, but thats still better than the alternative. Will an anemone stay put after a while or are they likely to still wander.
subflex
Thanks Suphew. I have thrown out the bits that were left unfortunately. There was very little material left of any description so I dont think it could've made a come back. Bu tnow I'm starting to fell a little guilty :-? rossco
Try using some 4" perforated novaflow around the stream as pictured. I haven't had any problems since doing it. Doesn't eliminate the risk but sure as hell significantly reduces it. Plenty of flow around stream still so I don't think it reduces performance much.
