  1. They are reknowned for being able to mix with a variety of cichlids. This makes them easier to keep . They will not show aggression to other fish but will also hold their own when needed. However give a yellow guy a single girl and he will hassle her constantly the secret to keeping cichlids is to keep compatible varieties and lots of them. often aggression will be reduced by a busy tank as the agressor loses the victim in the crowd. Plenty of nooks and crannies are required they are territorial and will require breeding spots. keep feeding to 3-4 times per day in small amounts this will also keep aggression down and will minimise bloat. Cichlids are always hungry even when they are full.
  2. electric blues are pseudotropheus socolofi. These fish are very agressive and should not be kept in groups the same goes for melanichromis johanni. If you ever visit the stores and see munched fish I,ll guarantee they will be with socolofi or johanni yellow can be beautiful in large groups witha green plants and white rock I have seen some amazing setups like this. keep 3 females for every male you have yellow boys can be real promiscuious and stress a single female to death. Yellow females will breed easily from a young age . good luck RAZA Man

    Baby African!!

Electric yellow are quite adapt to being sexed at a very young age. Mothers will tend to hide, hence you not noticing. the chin drop in yellows can be quite narrow compared to others and makes it less noticeable unless side on. A baby at 1cm will be over a month old and will continue to hide until 3-6mths depending on what else is in the water circulating above. males will have definite colouring at 1-1 1/2 cm They will have strong black markings on the pectoral fins and anal fin. Females will have none or very little colouring in this area. They are a peaceable fish and will genrally get along very well with all other types. Males can be rather full on with mating and keeping two females will be an advantage otherwise she will always be pregnant and become quite stunted. I have found these fish do not live for long periods in comparison to other types of Mbuna. RAZA Man
  4. sumthinfishy catch you in the chat room sometime
  5. My tank is 800 litres this gives great parameters for keeping a variety of fish and is real easy to maintain. Look at members tanks
  6. The trick is to be patient and decide in what types of cichlids are compatible and what you would like to keep. Stay within the boundaries of acceptance IE only certain peacocks can be put together even though with their amazing colours we would like to keep them all. Secondaly be patient with your purchases. I waited 3 years to find a dimidio and for $30.00 purchase and $160 flew him from wellington. One of three I have seen in 3 years. Keep an eye out for fish the shops do not have a proper name for. This guy was in a show tank for a short while and they liked him but thought he was a hybrid. I got him with some pressure and $60.00 Turns out he was quite the man. However if he was a hybrid I would have given him away and accepted the cost of risking the id process. I also have to accept that with him and some others I will be restricted to not keeping smaller genus types. Also because of fish size I have difficulty with all the young ones that shops keep. they get eaten. Nice to be a part of this Kiwi Forum
  7. thanks Alan could'nt quite figure out how to do that, he's awesome ah
  8. He will ultimately change to blue with red green colours http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5 ... 9BbtmzVy4U
  9. Have been registered with Cichlids.com for sometime now and my wife showed me this NZ site today. pleased it is available. Have a 800 litre african cichlid tank. 3 years now. Have been slowly collecting specific genus types for a while. Some have since become more common others a little harder to source. My biggest complaint is the lack of knowledge in stores. I have been able to assist people with fish keeping through my fry sales and am always looking for new tips and information.
