I've nearly finished my hood for my 2' tank. The hood is made out of Australian Silky Oak, so I want a clear finish. I was thinking of finishing it with marine varnish, but now I am wondering if Danish oil might be a good idea. Does anyone know if it is stable enough in the long term? Has anyone used it before?
The girl at the shop said you need to recoat it every ten months or so, but she was just repeating what they had told her to say at the sales course because what she told me about the marine varnish was a load of ^&%. :roll:
I'm still leaning towards the marine varnish, but the oil might have a warmer glow to it.

With swimbladder problems they don't necessarily have to float. It can also affect the balance of a fish.
Unfortunately without any other simptoms it is very hard to diagnose what else it could be.

Adult guppies would probably be allright with Barbs, but don't expect any young to survive. I had tiger barbs with neons and that was no problem.

Does the heater get turned up with a little knob? If so vibrations from the filters or air pumps might have caused it to turn. ( my 100th post YAY

That was the first theory that I thought of as I was reading your post. The only thing you can do is to give it rest and hope it will recover.

I have just started a new thread in the general breeding section about this problem. I would be interested in any reactions you have to it.

In the diseases section there are two people who have simmilar problems with their BN's. They seem to be dieing for no good reason. I had the same thing happen to me a while ago. Every new BN I bought died within a short time of purchase.
I am wondering how many people who breed BN's regularly get new blood into their breeding program.
What do other breeders think of the theory that BN's are being inbred so much that can't handle a change in conditions (i.e. being moved to a new home)?

Could it be a problem with the swim bladder? Have you seen any fighting which might have caused internal damage? Otherwise it might be caused by some sort of infection (very hard to tell if it is).
Can you isolate him in a hospital tank?

Spoon wrote about poisoning his fish because the condensation went back into the tank, that doesn't surprise me much. Paint has a stabiliser in it to stop all the ingredients from seperating. This comes to the surface as the paint dries. Whenever you paint something for use in or above the aquarium you should ALWAYS rinse it off thoroughly before putting it to use. Warning If you rinse too early, before the paint has fully cured (read instructions on can) you could have to start all over again as the water can affect the drying process of the paint.
P.S. drying and curing are two seperate time frames

I only have a two foot tank so they are at the end before they can realy get going but in general they do stay reletively close to each other. If I had more I think they would school better.

Ivé just reread the whole thread, and one question you never answered was how long your tank has been set up. could your tank still be cycling?

I know that the silicon that plumbers use (which is poisonous to use in tanks) will last about 7-10 years before it starts to break down. However the aquarium silicon is designed for different conditions and is not exposed to the same environmental variations as plumbing silicon.
I will confirm that I have heard the same about ammonia tollerance of a BN, and if it is true then Loopy might be onto something.

What do you think about Harlequins, I got 5 recently and they are great. I know they'll go great with what you've already got. My ones show up with bright orange neon edges after the sun has set. (probably be an effect from my light though).
I wish I could put more in my tank but I'm already pushing the stocking limits. 8)

I'm beginning to wonder if Adodge is right about the residue thing. If the silicon is starting to break down, or if the tank was build by someone who used the wrong kind of silicon, then it would be those fish that scrape algae of it that get affected.

My wife has just started breeding Maine Coon cats (or will do once the queen comes of age). She will desex all kittens that don't go to recognised breeders.
We now have three cats, A spayed Coon, a spayed moggie and a 5month old Queen. The first two we have trained to come in at 9 pm for their dinner and our little princess doesn't go out unless it's into her outdoor cage. :bounce:

Just brainstorming
How big is your tank? have they got enough room to mark off territory?(your golds will have their own spots too unless ivé got the wrong idea).
How many hiding places do you have? My Gold Rams have all taken a certain hiding area they considder their own. Normally they will intermingle in the open areas but if they want time out they retreat to their own hiding places.
Might the Blues considder the Golds close enough relatives to see them as a threat?

I found my Tiger Barbs were ripping apart the soft plants, I have now found a tougher leafed (cant remember the name) plant that seems to be surviving. I hope these will eventually cover the whole bottem of the tank.

It's the softer parts that the sapstream flows through that rots first. I don't know how long the rest would take to collapse though.

Sorry to upset you!!
It s just that a while ago I made a mistake because I was not aware of an aspect of the cycle, and lost some fish... just was trying to be helpfull.... I feel it is better to warn for things then be sorry afterwards...

Are you an experienced aquarist? Do you know about the Nitrogen Cycle? If not do some reading up on this too. Being forewarned is being forearmed.

I do have a glass lid on there at the moment but the hood is designed to replace it.
That was my main concern as well Alanmin. Even if it is stable enough in the short term it, would probably deteriorate too quickly to make it worth while.
The Marine varnish will have a slightly yellowing effect but it is made to be around water.
I didn't tell the girl at the shop I am a painter, she was trying to tell me I had to put 6-7 coats on to make the marine varnish work. What a laugh, no paint has any extra benefit after three coats. :lol:
