  1. So I'm getting nitrates and nitrites now To minimise the risk of stress when I do add a few fish, should I do lots of small water changes? Something like 10% every 3 days?
  2. Sadly not, which is a little frustrating.
  3. I'm cycling a 65L tank and have been adding ammonia (although I clearly added too much... lesson learned) I will be keeping cold water fish so I do not have a heater and can't really justify buying one to only use for cycling. I have raised the outflow from my water pump as high as it can go to create a bit of a waterfall and oxygenate the water. I'm fortunate in that there is no chlorine added to the water here in Napier, so that is one less thing to worry about Thanks for your help
  4. Good afternoon, I have a couple of questions regarding a fishless cycle: 1. Is there any benefit to running/not running lighting when cycling? Do the bacteria need/hate light? 2. Should I cycle with a full tank of water or is there any benefit to having it half full (higher concentration of ammonia?). Thanks, Dean
  5. Thanks again, I found out that Napier has no chlorine in the water, so that is a great start Now I just have to figure out a better filtration system for the long-term.
  6. Thanks for the reply. I have just found out that chlorine is not added to Napier water, so that is a good result
  7. Hi everyone, Does anyone have any experience in using Sodium Thiosulfate to remove chlorine? Is there anywhere in NZ that I can buy it? Thanks, Dean
  8. Thanks for the replies. I know I'll only be able to have a few small fish in the tank. I'm starting the cycling process today.
  9. Thanks, I have edited my original post to say that I live in Napier. I have bought an aquastart 500, which the internet tells me is 65L
  10. Hi everyone, I live in Napier and I have just bought a 2nd hand tank and I'm hoping to start the process of cycling today. It came with an under gravel filter, which I will replave with a 'better' filter but I'll just use it for now in order to start a fishless cycle. Does anyone have advice on places to get equipment, other than a pet store (website suggestions, or somewhere that isn't obvious for getting equipment) Thanks edit: added where I live
