  1. this makes an interesting case for doing water changes while cycling http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/226664-why-water-changes-during-cycling-are-good/

so I wouldn't feel too bad about doing your once a week change if you want, but you probalby dont need to. I think the ppm you want to go up to depends on the number of fish you want to put in initially - the more ammonia your bio filter manages to deal with the more fish it can deal with

  2. Nice! ive got a tank at work and love it! very nice of our employers to let us waste their electricity!

If it was me I would try adding a bit of height to the scape, but I dont have Cichlids, so dont know if that works with them?

  3. mine are the chinese versions (Beaufortia kweichowensis) rather than (Pseudo)Gastromyzon so that might make a difference,

Like I said, it only got down that cold the once, and I increased the temp a bit as soon as I noticed it, but they still seemed pretty active.

  4. most sources recommend around 18 minimum

My tank got down to 12 degrees at one point last winter, and they seemed fine. It wasnt at that temp for very long though (used bottles with hot water in them to warm it up a few degrees) so I would say if your tank doesnt go below 14 you should be ok :)

  5. No native fish are algae eaters, so for natives you would be looking at snails or limpets.

I have some shrimp with my Borneo suckers. They eat basicaly the same stuff as the shrimp (diatoms and fish food) but can suck onto the glass where your shrimps might not be able to get to. Won't have much, if any impact on green algae though.

Your other option in an unheated tank could be a Chinese Algae Eater. I havent kept them, but from what I have heard, I would be worried about them harassing the shrimp, and they eat less algae once they get a bit bigger

  6. yea, it obviously does depend on the situation

eg: "can I get you a drink?" - the person asking is - in my opinion - offering to get the other person a drink

If you say this to a mate at your house, or at a bar, it would be safe to assume that the person doesn't need to do anything in exchange (except maybe get the next round)

however if the bar staff asks you this they are still offereing you a drink (which you can accept or reject) but you would be expected to pay for it

Not saying that this is how the situation played out with the old lady, but you normally try to make your expectations as clear as possibe :)

  7. ...why would she, you offered her some food n coffee

Having worked in hospo I know what this situation is like!

If you go and sit at a cafe someone will come over and offer you food and coffee :D

Depending on the restaurant/cafe it is often a bit rude to take a credit card to set up a tab, putting all the risk on the employee/business

  8. ..........Why put them back if the idea is to reduce the numbers? :-?

cause if it kills them all then there wont be any :) Sounds as though iisfaq is just after a reduction in numbers, rather than total elimination

interestiong point re: Loaches eating dead snails... would have thought it would be ok, as it is a water borne medication, rather than 'snail bait' so the fish wont get anything they arent getting anyway?

I used it recently in a small minnow pond to get rid of some hair algae with no problems. The Fish were fine, and I imagine they would have been eating a few dead invertebrates

  9. hey guys, just going back to the conversation about chlorine we had before -

I found a chlorine test kit at my work! tested my tankwater after doing a 30% change using untreated tap water and got a reading of less than 0.05 ppm, so I was pretty happy with that!

out of curiosity I then tested the tap water and got a reading of between 0.05 and 0.1

according to this: http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/dwq/chlorine.pdf it should be sitting at arround 0.2-1 ppm... so maybe the test is dodgy, or maybe we just use less in NZ?
