  1. Its all about when you ask
  2. My hubby said exactly the same thing! I don't care, I'm setting him up a tank based on my pleco he likes (I'm guessing common?) and I'm stocking it and calling it his tank, which it will be in name only. Bahahaha!!!
  3. Cheers, they get a premium dried food but I like to provide variety I think it's really important to suppliment, all in moderation, apply it to life and it will be sweet :bggrn:
  4. She got a new batch of neons cause the rasbora's died and she had neons before but amazingly they died as well as the female angel and loads of guppies, I mean come on if the guppies were dying I'm amazed there was any life in there. Fish can be amazingly resilient but that doesn't mean we should put them in conditions that test that relisience to the limit. :an!gry Sorry this whole episode really got to me poor poor things.
  5. I can't really complain when I get my lawns mowed and gardens done for free. Gonna try put it on the corner of the deck this time and explain why its there lol, the landlords live behind me, really nice people, they seem to think my fish obession is a bit quirky like they have the crazy cat lady living in thier house :sml1: Any way back on topic, I know my angel will like the mozzie larvae but is it ok for my African cichlids (electric blue and yellows) as well?
  6. And she couldn't understand why all the fish kept dying  . We need to educate people! :sage: The poo in the bottom of the tank was about an inch deep, more in some places. I would take pics but don't have a camera, next on the to buy list. By the time I do get a camera they should be looking really great. I don't know if the angel's fins will ever reach thier full potential but I have high hopes for the lill survivors.
  7. Yea I was trying to get some mozzie larve or algae in a tiny paddling pool, but I forgot to tell the landlord that it is supposed to look like that and he tipped out when he mowed my lawns Oh well he was trying to be helpful.
  8. I just bought a tank off a girl I met because I felt so bad for the inhabitants. She had an angel in with neons, of course the angel only had stubs left all it's fins had been nipped off . The girl also told me how awesome her filter is (it was pretty standard, I have a similar one for my smaller tank) and that she only changes the water once ever 6 months or a year!!! :an!gry and when she does change the water she changes it all and puts the fish in the bath while she does it!! &c:ry It was horrible you could hardly see the fish and they didn't move, were pale in colour and gasping at the surface. She didn't even have the filter running. Any way I am doing what I can for them and the angel is starting to regrow it's fins, he is now named miracle. The pleco is actually being fed rather than only having to scavenge and they are all getting their colour back and swim around much more now, they come up to greet you when you walk into the room. A bit of an expensive resuce mission and I don't really have the room for it but I couldn't leave it there knowing about the treatment they were getting.
  9. I already have some cichlids in another tank, they are super cool looking for something totally different to what I already have for this tank. Man that is one awesome looking fish! I used to have a beautiful blue fighter years ago, standard fins tho.
  10. I am confused by thier answer to your question, to me it read to say that it is a sand "as oposed to a gravel"? OMG so freaking cool! I don't want to spend too much but will be picking up each bit over a few months so that I can spend more than if I rushed it. Yea I did think of that, but tank is way to small and I'm guessing they would prefer a longer tank as oposed to the tall one I have. Still really stuck on what fish to really make the tank, needs to have a bit of attitude (or at least look like it does), maybe something a little unusual hmmmmm......
  11. They might not have but I certainly did after you posted that pic on another thread of mine bahahaha, works a charm btw cheers :slfg:
  12. Thanks Sophia, although the theme is the most important it should in no way impact negatively on it's inhabitants. The black sand that I looked at on TradeMe was a fine sand and certainly not gravely at all. That could be super cool, do you know where I might find one of these?
  13. Thanks Camtang, really don't know why I hadn't already looked for the sand on TradeMe but yes there it is Also really like the look of some of the skulls on kensfish.com, they have loads of sunken ships but no castles, still need to find one I like.
  14. Hey that is certainly an idea, I did see some of thoes at Reptilez hmmm add that to the possible stock list.
  15. I have been watching the series Tanked on Discovery Channel and my partner has got into watching it with me. He has now conceeded that he would like a themed tank (break through at last! :slfg:). I have grabbed onto this opportunity to get him involved in fish keeping and I have never tried to set up an artificially themed tank so should be an interesting challange for me too . The theme for the tank will be a dungeons & dragons type theme. The tank I have available is 350mm x 350mm x 620mm and holds approximately 60L. As far as decorations and stocking goes I'm thinking of: Background: The tank is tall and sits in the corner of a room so I was thinking of painting the two walls black. Substrate: Sand I would like this to be a dark gray to black if possible but I have only seen black pebbles not sand, does anyone know if I can get this and if so where? Decorations: I would like a large but tall dark grey castle for the centre of the tank, this will be the main piece. I have seen some castle ornaments for sale on TradeMe but most of these are too small or are longer than I would like and more suited to a longer aquarium. If anyone knows of someone who regularly sells ornaments or they can be ordered from it would be much appreciated. I would love to have a volcano bubbler in there complete with orange lighting this only needs to be small but again, not sure where to find it. I would also like to have several small (only 5-10cm) skulls either skattered around the bottom of the tank or piled up, again not sure where to find these. I'm not convinced on some of these decorations and would welcome some more ideas. Stocking: So far I'm thinking approx 5 Kuhlie Loaches, these will be like lava monsters spawned from the volcano and the dark wizards evil spells, approx 8 glass catfish which make for an excellent army of skeletons. Now I just need one or two fish to be the centre of the tank, I was thinking two black angels would make excellent dark lords in thier flowing black capes, but I'm not feeling totaly convinced by this, since there is already so much black in the tank maybe I should go with something totally different. If I didn't have the angels I might also look at getting approx 12 glow light tetras but think I will stay away from these fin nippers. Any suggestions on decoration or stocking would be much much appreciated I have a chance to really get my man interested in this most awesome hobby and incidentally increasing the amount of tanks I will be allowed to keep
  16. Excellent, I have just collected several bottles (thank you christmas/new years!), and was trying to figure out how to expand.
  17. Cheers guys, that is all pretty close to what I'm doing, I guess it's just practice now till I get the technique sussed.
  18. Yea I remembered that, I more meant that I scoop the casings off the top of the water but then I still have unhatched eggs in the bottom and all along the slopped sides of the bottle and was wondering what method people use to get the bbs out whilst getting as few unhatched eggs as possible. I currently just let it all settle for a couple hours then unhook the airhose and drain the water through a coffee filter but I'm still getting some of the unhatched eggs.
  19. Just wondering, once hatched, how do you separate out the bbs from the un-hatched eggs and casings?
  20. I rent as well so I just make 4 small holes around the bottom of the bottle (top when upside down) string nylon through and use the clip thing from my swivels in the tackle box to clip the loops together and hang it in the hot water cupboard, easy as pie. On that note, was rather surprised when I dumped some bbs I'd had lying around in storage for 2 1/2 years and they actually hatched! Rate is probably less than when I bought them about 4 years ago but still of use yay!
