  1. Well I got the 1000lph one and it's perfect for my 200l tank. Would def be good for a nano marine tank!
  2. Where do you guys get your plants from? Is there an individual or shop with the best range? I'm in Auckland and Hollywood FF Albany is my local. Is it worth venturing anywhere else or is there a better range online? Not after anything too exotic or anything, just wondering if there is a "best" place. Cheers
  3. Oh no, here's another one... http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 372786.htm
  4. Is poret a special type of sponge? or does it mean anything that looks like this?
  5. Any old sponge I can use in a filter will do, pref a few different grades. I'd rather pay packing foam prices, not aquarium supplies prices
  6. I need a piece of poret foam sized like one of these
  7. Hi guys, Anyone know where to get large pieces of medium-coarse filter sponge? The LFS charges like a wounded bull for it Para or similar? Bunnings has none Cheers
  8. Will do. They even make a little 600lph one which would probably be ideal for a nano http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 920954.htm
  9. Just grabbed one of these little 1000lph ones so will give that a whirl (pun intended)
  10. OK cool. I have a 3d background with the plumbing hidden behind it. I split the canister return pipe into two, one empties near the top of the background and one near the bottom. It seems to have affected the flow rate too much though, so I think I'll try blocking off the bottom return first which should get the pressure back up out of the top one and stir things up more. Failing that, I see there are even smaller wave makers you can get, like 1000 lph, so perhaps one of those would work ok?
  11. I'm looking to get one for a 200l freshwater tank which needs a bit of a circulation boost. Would 3000lph be sufficient for this? I'd like to keep the unit as small as possible. This 3000lph sunsun is $42 and has a magnetic base There is also a 5000lph and a 6000lph for a few bucks more but I don't want a storm in my tank and the units are larger so if I could get away with the 3000 I will. What say you?
  12. If you find disgustipated's remarks "offensive" then you need to get out more...
  13. Looks like 3 members asked him "questions" on his auction :an!gry
  14. Holy crap. Just starting to wash this grit now to use in a new build and it's amazing hom much dust is in this stuff. I'm doing a test run with a couple kilos in a bucket and have washed and stirred it up 15 (yes fifteen) times and the water is still going opaque brown... Looks like I'm gonna be spending a while outside with the hose tomorrow... :phb:
  15. That's a whopper Is he the biggest though? :dno:
  16. There's a big one at Hollywood Fish Farm in Albany in their display tank. It's easily over a foot long anyway
  17. It's the stuff from stone & water world 0.8-1.4mm
  18. Speaking of plecos, if I have grit as a substrate, does that mean no plecos? I know it's a bad idea with corys, but what about plecos? There are also rocks and driftwood in the tank
  19. Now you see what I mean about loads of conflicting setups online, and this is just one thread :lar: Thing is most of these setups seem to work fine, so I guess I'll just experiment a bit and see what works well for me
  20. I have a 4-stage canister, so would you guys suggest bioballs->noodles->coarse foam->wool? Just a bit concerned about the post above saying the wool can get into the impeller. There are loads of contradicting posts online so perhaps it isn't too important as long as it's kinda sensible? What would you suggest for a 4 tray canister? Thanks
  21. Possibly. I know Flourish Excel is used to treat blackbeard though. I'd try manually removing as much as you can and trimming the worst affected areas of the plants and then using Flourish Excel (must be the Excel one). Not many fish eat blackbeard but there are one or two IIRC
  22. So I got that unit and it is all wired in with waterproof end caps. I've ripped out all the SunSun electric guts from the hood and will attach in this new ballast with some reflectors. Sorted! Now, the SunSun lighting setup had a thin piece of perspex that slid in to the hood to protect the lights from condensation. This no longer fits due to the larger size of the new waterproof end caps (old ones were not waterproof). How vital is this if one has the waterproof endcaps? Will the tubes and endcaps handle condensation from the tank? Will it be Ok to have them exposed to the damp air in there? I see you can buy "condensation trays" (as in pic below) but they look ugly and cumbersome and possible reduce light efficiency. Do I need them?
