  1. I think I'll be happy with small tanks (or small-medium), just maybe not quite as small as 28L in future ;-)
  2. Oops; you are right, I put in the wrong number! length x width = surface area surface area x height = volume volume / 1000 = liters Now I think that size tank is gi-normous! You could keep sharks in a tank that size?
  3. Hello again so a tank of 120cm (long) x 60cm (high) x 60cm (wide) is 'medium'?? To me that seems huge! I worked out it would be 144L, and my 28L tank would fit into that 5x! What size is considered to be a 'large' tank? I do actually like the little fish and I like how my neons are schooling now too. I also like guppies and plan to get a couple of them at some stage. Was that a list of other little fish, F15hguy?
  4. Great video, thanks for the link :-) And I was thinking the snails would reduce the 'bio load', but if they add to it... that is something else to consider with the complex process of tropical fish keeping!! If snails add to the bio load; is this because they also use oxygen?
  5. My tanks now seems way too small for tropical fish keeping; 28L. I like the comment about the loaches getting depressed! I will be sure to get some as a group, eventually, but maybe not for this little tank ;-) Keeping tropical fish has turned out to be far more complex than i first thought! It is fascinating though. And distracting. :-)
  6. Ok, with that photo now I understand... overtaking the tank, yep. Well, I'll just have to see how these snails go in my tank... and if they start to over-run it then I'll be plucking them out myself, and I will get another employee (a loach to eat them). Thanks for all the advice!
  7. wow - so how fast do they reproduce? The tank has only been running for 5 weeks.
  8. Thanks for the info. The other day I found a second snail, and yesterday I spotted a tiny one, so that is 3 in total... but I don't know how many there were to start with or when they were introduced to my tank, but 3 isn't bad... :-)
  9. Hello Earlier this week I found a snail in the tank! My initial thought was: who put it there? But it has probably been there for a while. After a bit of hunting on the internet, I think it is a Malaysian Trumpet Snail. Apparently these snails are excellent for the aquarium; they do not eat plants but help aerate the substrate, eat detritus and left over food that is underneath the substrate (info from: http://www.planetinverts.com/malaysian_ ... snail.html :sage: ). My tropical aquarium is 5 weeks old and I am happy the snail is there; a surprise employee :-) So, 1. Who else has a Malaysian Trumpet snail in their tank? (my snail could only have come from the pet store, so does everyone have these snails?). 2. Any interesting snail facts to share?
  10. I agree; for little fish there is a lot of interesting behaviour! Thanks for the interesting notes.
  11. Hello everyone Just an update on the neon behaviour: I added 3 new neons so now there are 6 neons in the tank and they are all getting along just fine. At first introduction of these new neons they fought like mad! Think of the old batman cartoon where you see "pow", "smack", "punch"; it was getting pretty violent! Its now been nearly a week and there is almost no fighting, the worst they do is occasionally chase each other around the tank. A bit of a relief :-)

    Hello

I've decided to keep a couple of algae eaters and neons - I have a very small 28L tank. It is certainly big enough to learn lots from though! Fish keeping, and learning about fish keeping, is a good way to procrastinate ;-)
  13. Yeah I was wondering if this was going to be a little overstocked, but I was also thinking that if I change the water frequently and get some plants growing then it should be ok. If the Black lined Flying fox gets to big the shop I bought it from said i could return it for a smaller fish. I would love  to have a bigger tank - but I actually need a bigger house! Plus, I'm renting so who knows if a landlord will allow a big fish tank in their house! The good side is I'm learning lots from setting up this little tank, so when I do get a bigger tank I'll be a better fish-keeper :-)

    Hello

Hello I've already asked a question on this forum with a very quick and useful responses. Its great! I didn't think fish keeping could be so social ;-)
  15. Good to know; I'm wanting a few guppies too, and a couple of algae eaters (have a Flying Fox already), so it will be a busy little tank. I think that will add up to 11 fish total...
  16. Hello Zev Interesting comment, I will keep this in mind :-)
  17. Wow Thanks for all the reply's, and so quick! The majority of you are suggesting more neons for better behaviour, so maybe I'll go get a few more and see if that settles them down. I know it is a small tank too - I'm flatting so can't really have anything bigger at the mo. Though so far this new hobby has turned out to be more of a challenge than I thought! Was there another Zuri? I just like the name and usually "Zuri" itself isn't available so I add to it :-)
  18. Hello I've just set up a new tropical aquarium (2 weeks ago actually), have added some plants and a few fish. I'm kind of a beginner, but I am surprised to have fighting neons. I have 3 neon fish in a 28 liter tank. Two of them fight almost constantly; attacking and biting each other while the third neon just does its own thing. The two fighting neons are similar sized, the third is smaller. I was wondering if anyone could explain why these two neons are fighting, and should I be worried about it? Yay, I'm so glad for the opportunity to ask on a forum! This is my first posting :-)
