got a pic? i assume the durso pipe itself is bigger than the outlet from the tank? mines 40mm durso, 32mm outlet, 40mm drain pipe

I bought a centameter off trademe a couple days ago, should get it tomorrow hopefully. Im going to hook it up to the RCD circuit that runs the sump room and main tank (the only thing not on that circuit is the closed loop but could probably guesstimate that cost) will keep ya'll posted, will be interesting to see what the ongoing cost to this little hobby is

yeah, but it's called 32mm measure inside diameter of pump it will usually be same (or slightly less) than the inside diameter of the pipe. most pumps are 3/4" (20mm) or 1" (25mm) so that should be sweet

True, you can even see it in my tank. i aquascaped the left side of my tank and had the LR 'settling in' for about 4-5 months before I got around to even looking at the right side. Alot of the right side LR I bought and added afterwards. The 'quality' of the LR on left vs right side is quite significantly different. Left side has plenty of coralline, no build up of detritus and no algae on rocks; overall it looks really good. The right side is somewhat different though, the rock is more full of crud, algae and detritus build up (although over the past couple of months is noticeably improving and looking more like the left side). Its the same lighting over the whole tank and obviously same water conditions Only difference is the time its had to 'cook' I guess, I do remember having similar algae problems on left side as I have on right side now. Time will tell I guess. As you say, it seems logical that the "cooking" process is always happening. Im assuming that cooking rocks outside of the tank is done purely to speed up the process because its easier to suck the crap that is shed from the rocks? Any other reason?

now thats a bit better. pity its "marine pollution bulletin" done in 1989 though, posted 2003 but still evidence from 1989. not saying bacteria has changed it's ways but methodologies for nutrient export has. in some cases. that does not mean in every case. perhaps explains why some tanks work and some dont. very big generalisation that. in most cases perhaps, but would not take it as gospel. probably half the reason the outcome of some scientific studies performed by various people is different.

...oh, and im not even disputing that you are wrong about sand storing phosphates and ultimately effecting live rock, in fact it sounds quite logical. im disputing how you (sometimes) provide your evidence. the quantity of links you post to support your theories does not prove you are right

i still fail to see hard core evidence from your post layton, too many dissimilarities between "evidence" you post and a marine tank. our tanks are a small piece of the ocean, influenced by alot less factors than you find in nature. i dont have the black sea, baltic sea, the gulf or a lagoon off to the side of my tank, to me its likely the composition of seawater in these areas works much different to what you will find in a marine tank. im not a scientist but i do know that changes or differences in an environment can greatly influence results from scientific studies.

I think it's the way you come across Layton, more so than what you say. You take a theory by someone (whether it be text book or net) and if it sounds kinda right to you, you argue that it MUST be true. You dont seem to listen to others because you are too caught up in these theories (and theories are often all they are, generally dictated by "well science has proved it right, so it must be right", you should know as well as anyone that in reef keeping, this is not always the case. what works for one person may not work for another). To some, it comes across as arrogant. I agree you definately add value to this site. Just think about how you come across when you write some of your posts (and no, Im not saying you're the only one guilty of it)

thats the benefit of having an overflow to a sump both. part of the cycle yes, thats why best not to add too much too soon. topping up with tap water is highly likely (being akl water) to make it worse

well if anyone is driving or flying down to wellies, more than welcome to come pick up some frags and drop them off i was throwing frags of green star polyps and montipora off my deck last night. i also broke off and put a decent size cap of monti in my fuge coz it was blocking light to many other frags (not to mention reducing flow!)
