  1. warren - can you still get hold of UPS' that you could perhaps sell to hobbyists here? maybe you could make a buck or two i might see if i can nab one from work, mainly to keep the heater going incase the temperature drops and maybe to maintain a bitta water flow. gets a bit chilly here some nights and the temperature can drop pretty fast and pretty low!
  2. Hi all, Well after hunting around for prices on different online web sites all around the world, I dont actually think that these guys are too badly priced. They are close (which generally means cheaper shipping) and have a reasonable range of product. I believe a few of you have purchased from them in the past - pies, steve? I emailed their sales support asking what typical shipping costs are (as this is generally what hoists product prices up when buying offshore) and also what specific shipping costs would be for a typical Calcium reactor and RODI unit (both largish-sized products) Here is their response: Hi James, Thanks for your email. New Zealand is a market that we do get a fair bit of custom from, but as every order is different both in size and weight, it is difficult to give people an indication of how much items will cost to ship except on an individual enquiry basis. That being said, if you wanted to combine orders with other hobbyists you know, we are more than happy to combine orders to save on shipping. We offer 10% discount for bulk orders over A$2000 already (but it is a shop practice, not a written rule as such), so if you were to combine your order with some friends you would all get 10% off fairly quickly. OK, your shipping costs for the two products (I have assumed a Korallin C-1501) would be A$90.00 Economy Air (2-4 weeks) or A$107.50 Air Mail (4-10 Business days) Hope this helps. Kind Regards, Natalie Newman Reef Online What I want to know is 1. have a browse of their site and tell me if there is any product you might be interested in? 2. do you think their product is reasonably priced versus buying here at the LFS or other online sites? If we could potentially get enough people to buy AUS$2,000+ of product then the 10% discount might ease the back pocket a little. Basically, Im just disgusted at prices the LFS here charge. Im not interested in supporting them just to provide them with big fat wads of cash in their back pockets, everyone here is a consumer and wants the best deal they can get - dont deny it! If NZL LFS want to tap into the market better, they should provide an online ecomm fish shop and fire some of their part time school-kid staff members (wow, what a rant ) Let me know what you think.
  3. ok then Brendan, post us your best price (and i mean best price) for a decent calcium reactor - the one with the "aa approved pies" product logo I wanna hear your sales pitch, gimme a goodie

dear god,... i can just see it now - the perfect married couple, ira in a checkered brown '70's tux and pies in a satin white wedding dress,... gazing into each others eyes standing proudly at the alter... "oh pie man, we must stop bickering like this, we're about to get married" "oh im sorry ira, you know you are my widdle wee idiotic man" lord of the ringpiece! ha ha haaaaa!!!
  5. Ira - lumen and lux are different terms but they are directly related - the intensity of the light is measured as lumens and "lumens per square metre" is called lux
  6. Cheers mate, and yes it does make sense. It will be a refugium with lighting - just a 900mm double fluoro. Painting the glass/using dark glass is a good concept too - will definately do that. Makes sense to put another piece of glass on the bottom then the multiple dividers straight up to allow for different media in each baffle. Anything that makes it easy and functional is great. Re: the middle support, I agree and was going to remove it anyway (I was also thinking about removing the end one where the over flow is!) Will do a design tonight and post...
  7. I got hold of a 3 foot tank that I want to use as a refugium for my main tank. I want to add an overflow to it. When adding the piece of glass inside the tank to form the overflow - are there any implications with adding the glass on an angle? (the reason is because of existing supports at the bottom of the tank, see pic below) Also, what type of silicon do you use or can I use any type? Is there anything you need to watch out for? Here's a quick pic I drew up of what I want to achieve which maybe easier to explain it:
  8. i dont mean putting a 300 watt heater in a gold fish bowl
  9. advantages/disadvantages both ways - you dont want a smaller heater struggling to maintain temperature on a cold winter night!!!
  10. got it at last after 13 edits!!!! here's the code...! | | ----- | / \
  11. errrr, a bigger wattage heater than your tank requires - am i getting my "rated" around the wrong way?
  12. I suppose you dislike E.T too?
  13. Hey Nick, Cheers for the reply. Steve said that you had the Aquamedic one just couldnt remember as it was a while ago I saw your sump - and I do remember your home made job for the argonite now (made of PVC tubing wasn't it?!) I'll check out the Korallin pricing to compare! Oh, and also, what do you think about reeftech versus korallin?... http://www.reefonline.com.au/shop/default.php?cPath=25 See you Sunday. Cheers, James
  14. you're a man of many words steve cheers! any experience, heard any reviews on these reactors? i'll still get a dosing pump for kalk though i think. worth its weight in gold.
  15. usually best to get a slightly over-rated heater for your tanks size - they typically last longer coz its not continually cycling on/off. errr.... 115 pounds? thats like $350 - best you start using the $ sign - or are you actually in england?!
  16. You forgot to mention that UPS batteries only last a certain period and need replacing (ok, so for a fish tank they will probably last 5 years+ but its worth noting) Also dont forget the surge/spike protection that most UPS' offer too..., which comes to my next point - if you cant afford a UPS you should at least get surge/spike protection for the rare occurances that might blow the power supply in your pumps/filters. Only around $40 odd bucks from Dick Smith.
  17. whoa,... murky water or a bad camera?
  18. anyone got or use the Aquamedic's Calcium Reactor 1000 as per this page?... http://www.aquatics-warehouse.co.uk/aca ... S_209.html or http://www.stm-shop.co.uk/acatalog/Aqua ... ctors.html Am considering buying this and getting family to bring it back after their holiday in the UK. Does anyone use an aquamedic's calcium reactor? Any issues with them? I assume hydrocarbonate from any system is ok to add. Also, what else (other than CO2 bottle, reg, bubble counter and dosing pump) is needed? Does this take/need a pH probe?

I can now say that after installing the temperature controller, that this simple device is an absolute "must have" for your aquarium! Takes the worry away from temperature fluctuations; especially in Aucklands varying climate. Cheers Steve, you're a legend - I highly recommend a temp controller for a stress-less aquariumingismactionatoring! (ok, so i made that word up)
