  1. probably green hair algae http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/algaecontrol/a/aa070403.htm the above is for saltwater aquariums but i would imagine the same rule applies.
  2. would be interesting to put a deltec on there for a week steve and see if it does as well! diy and ugly doesnt mean its worse!
  3. i think any deltec skimmer just seem to be awesome. i stripped every removeable part of my TS1060 down last night, cleaned it out and reassembled. i siliconed back up some broken supports, superglued a broken piece on one of the pumps and flushed the whole thing clean. wow what a difference! the whole thing just sounds better let alone running better. still, when you see the skimmer in bits on the floor, it's hard to justify where the cost goes in them!
  4. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCUSSION ON RESULTS HERE: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?p=85187 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ******************** APRIL'S RESULTS ************************* It's that time again to run some tests... April's results... pH = 8.8 (estimated - from dry tab, perhaps not accurate) PO4 = 0ppm NO3 = 0ppm kH = 9.6 Ca = 400 Mg = 1100 Salinity = 1.026 @ 25 degrees Changes since February: - Salinity has gone up .001 - pH is way too high (checking this with 'pH meter' shortly) - Magnesium has not changed even though there are chips in Calcium reactor  - Good that nitrates and phosphates are still zero but cant work out why Im getting a bit of green hair algae? - kH has increased heaps from 7.0 to 9.6, cool - Calcium up from 380 to 400, cool, but was hoping for around 450 Summary: Calcium reactor needs optimising. pH needs checking during morning hours to compare, if it actually is too high need to reduce kalk dosing/get a solenoid for the Calcium Reactor!

  6. cool, see you tomorrow then
  7. that is the brand i have. only shows 8.2 on colour chart as a greeny colour then 9.0 is a bluey colour. hard to tell what's in between! have my skimmer in bits at the moment, even stripped down the eheims. dont think this thing has ever been thoroughly cleaned since new! now I gotta just put it back together...
  8. My pH (albeit dry-tab test - so not highly accurate anyway) states a pH of close to 9.0. i have just done this test now - near the very end of the photoperiod so pH is likely to be higher anyway (even up to 0.5 higher!), however i need to confirm this properly with an electronic pH meter because i dont trust the dry-tab kit. i believe the problem is because the pump that stirs my kalkwasser with my top-up water occurs too close to dosing (only about 15 minutes prior) so it does not give the kalk enough time to settle and get added to my tank. i've also reduced an end on my plumbing as water enters my sump too to increase aeration so hopefully this will also help. is there anyone in auckland area that either 1. has one for sale or 2. can loan me their one so i can test properly til i get around to buying one?

  10. Fay, RnB - are you saying here you are all running two skimmers? why not one big fattie instead? or are you saying these are the models you have owned?
  11. count me out, too short notice and too far to drive
  12. just new i'd get a response from jetski and reef seio's aren't small, but they are smaller than streams. pump, OM and plumbing cost about the same as a set of streams and controller. its not that this setup was done in favour of streams, it would be setup in conjunction with streams. streams couldnt provide water movement under the tank. however both OM and streams working together will provide optimum flow.
  13. read this on a reef site, IMO this is so true. Read the rest of the article on different pumps/wavemakers etc here: http://reefshow.com/html/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=104&mode=&order=0&thold=0#The%20Supreme%20Power%20Head: They give a good review for the Seio's, even though they cannot be controlled - they are considerably cheaper. They have a 1500gph model for these too. discussion from about 9 months ago: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=3366 Still can't justify the money for streams. They are obviously very good but large and expensive. http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_powerheads_pumps_taam_seio.asp?CartId=

of course, they are typically small frags and you have to wait for them to grow. I haven't spent more than about $40 on a single coral... yet. most a single or double 'stalk' no bigger than your little finger. still, a bit like a garden - i'd prefer to watch and allow it to grow

For a frag? Seems to be anywhere from $20 to $60 depending on size and type! Either that or frag swapping

very sad really,... and what make's it worse is the demand from hobbyists' like ourselves create a market for the locals to poach the reef's resources in order to make a living. if only aquacultured corals werent so expensive to produce...
