Finally happy with tank layout - Update 22/04/2011
Supaclear replied to phoenix44's topic in Freshwater
Mine gets munched by Angels, same as rose sword when new leaves come through. H.polysprema sunset bears most of it though which is not a bad thing. Nice tank P44  -
Hi all, I asked a question around apistos given current stocking in a juwel 260: harlequins (3) used to cycle (was 10 but angels have thinned them out) 4 wild type angels (p.scalare) 4 veiltail german blue rams 5 super red rosy barbs 6 odessa barbs 4 chain loaches 4 leopard cories 2 SAE 4 ottos 1 featherfin synodontis 1 bristlenose Feed back was half of my fish will become synodontis food......so apistos are out... it was also suggested that i rehome the syno....who is around 15cm i need to think about this one because he is one of my favourite fish.... all of my research indicated that synos were ok in a community provided they were kept alone in a tank my size and they have a habit of neon hunting at night. does anyone out there have a syno or have kept a syno in a community tank such as mine with no issues? cheers in advance andy

thanks guys, will do. andy

Nice description mate, reminds me of a few people i know. interesting stuff none the less and sure has got me thinking. surfing the net i can only find good things about them in a community with the exception of neons, who indeed go missing at night. same mode the angels seem to adopt. does anyone have a syno in a community setting such as mine with no probs?
-
Thanks team, forgive me but i have to ask, does any one have first hand experience with a syno munching anything other than tetras? its one of my favourite fish so i need to think about this one. Regardless, Apistos are safe, i wont get them.

Small world...I used to ride with Macstar a lot and have met your son at Macstars one weekend in coro. I was riding an X11 at that time, he may remember. good rider. HP2 sport? Wicked. I must remember this is a fish site, i posted about apistos...any words of wisdom appreciated. cheers andy

Crikey!!! thanks mate, hes about 15cm atm....and does have a big gob. whats prognosis from here?

Not sure what sort of granules you use but i am having great results with nulife spectra regular. rams and angels etc love it. I thought i was being taken for a ride given the price vs size but seems to last for ages. on shy fish, i have a striata loach in a nano that was snail ridden< didnt see him eat for about 6 weeks, same time as snails ran out

Morning all, lovelly day for staying inside and doing water changes etc... I have a juwel 260 with the following fishes: harlequins (3) used to cycle (was 10 but angels have thinned them out) 4 wild type angels 4 veiltail german blue rams 5 super red rosy barbs 6 odessa barbs 4 chain loaches 4 leopard cories 2 SAE 4 ottos 1 featherfin synodontis 1 bristlenose I reckon this is pretty well stocked but .... was wondering if i would have any issues sneaking a pair of apistos in there. cheers andy

hi Adrienne, great to see a few more bikers around i broke my ribs about 8 weeks ago and my warrant rego etc expired, need a new front tyre as well so havent been for a ride in what seems like ages. I normally commute into the city on the basis that i dislike traffic slightly more than i dislike rain, always have. i notice you a not too far away from where i live, keep an eye out for a charcoal and silver bmw k1200r. odds on thats me!! i dont post on kb any more mainly because of my work seems to interupt my social activities but i still get around with Blackbird and others. Check out his blog confessions of an aging motorcyclist. we did the RNGC and Geoff did a good write up with pics etc. http://geoffjames.blogspot.com/2010/10/1000-miles-in-21-14-hours-on-street.html cheers andy

I love it!!! awesome tank. maybe some Lcurviceps? nice bright ones?
-
Thankyou Mr Hovmoller!! as far as i know the angels are p scalare and agree they are sweet. i feed them NLS regular plus bloodworms. they also love to browse on my plants. i got them from hff after researching altums and wild type seem similar in appearance tho undoubtedly altums will get bigger. it would seem that i have 3 males and 1 female. 1 unsucessful batch of eggs so far. got eaten.

mmmm more flow bro...this has certainly helped me for algae and critters, your filtration sounds awesome. i run wool, sponges and purigen in the bioflow and water is spotless except poos time in the morning for about 30 mins if you know what i mean...... i recharge it every 6 weeks or so and have it sitting below 3 wool pads and i have a spare. does that make me an addict? Thanks mate, yeah crypts are cool. no melting and great growth. shame my photo skills suck.

P44 yep ran without purigen for a while but started again like the clear water junkie i am. figured that adding ferts would suffice over and above nitrogen cycle so remove the crap at source ie if i want nitrates then i add them. i heard purigen doesnt remove our salts to any great extent but will smoooth water perams no end. seems to be the case. whats your take on the whole purigen deal?
-
one day i hope to get that feel, for now i do and observe and redo. yes have checked out EI but wanted to try pmdd, one day ill start to get a feel for scapes but for now just happy that the fish are all good and plants are growing. yes used to frequent kb and know of morcs, prolly been for a group ride at some point. maybe we could organise a tank crawl, superbike style  zev, thanks mate, did read that but doesnt seem to help me. no fault of author, its all me, honestly...

when i was battling staghorn i reorted to API algaefix, sure did have an immediate effect on ramshorns, mts however seem to be another story and i have some whoppers. chain loaches have no effect on these units but must keep the smaller ones in check

thanks all. still having probs with pix but techno was never a strong suit. motorbikes are tho. any bikers here? P44 thanks for confirming, i have tested numerous times....unconventional, how so?

http://s1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa447/supaclear/?action=view¤t=Picture002.jpg does that work?

thanks guys, Hi Caryl, yes i was concerned at the lack of nitrates from day one really, i removed nitrate sponges, purigen and carbon but to no avail. i started with heaps of stems and didnt use ferts for a few weeks so just figured that the plants must be using them up quickly. i had cyano. i have since started using purigen again, maybe this absorbs sufficient levels of DOCs prior to nitrogen cycle? Certainly open to suggestions. Intutively they must be in there cause plant growth is amazing and i am using pmdd. TBH i havent tested since i started using PMDD but was dosing Seachem NPK to similar levels> maybe my test kit is suspect. Anyway the Rams seem to be thriving!! Andy

thanks P44, swords are amazing and vistors usually ask if they are for real. one of the rose swords is a bit dull by comparrison as shaded by val etc . i wanted to try out the idea of making light my limiting nutrient so will will leave it as it is for a while. will try and post pix later once i can get a dark shot of the tank.
