  9. I don’t think some people grasp the concept of what I was trying to show... As for moderation we should not require this for the most part we are all grown adults and should know by now what is and what is not considered acceptable behavior don’t you think. When I take my daughter to pre-school I find myself looking around the room at a bunch of 3 year old kids with more manners and a sense of right and wrong then some users of this forum I am appalled by the lack or respect some user show to others. So how does one become a moderator ??
  10. Before I start off on my rant and rave I would like to tell you why I decided to get into reef keeping. Firstly - I love a challenge and so keeping a slice of the ocean confined into 5 pieces of glass in my lounge has to be a challenge (yes five pieces of glass a front, back, two sides and a bottom) or maybe I am just completely mad you decide. Secondly – My partner fell in love with Finding Nemo (the movie and the fish). We both found a common interest in wanting to keep a reef tank we spend a lot of time working out what we wanted in our tanks and what the end result should be. In a strange way our slice of ocean has brought us closer together in a way I never thought possible that been said I didn’t invite her to the reef meeting last Sunday in Christchurch and she was a tad annoyed (sorry Rebecca love you lots, P.S hope you read this part). Last but not least – My 3 year old daughter who also fell in love with Finding Nemo (yes the movie and the fish also). The look on her face when she sees something new in the tank or our travels to the local fish shops is more then enough for me to send a few extra dollars on a fish or a coral (the little picture you see below my user name that’s my daughter Sam). So as you can see for me at least it’s not about the money it’s about quality time with the two people I love most in this world. I am sick and tired of the senseless, mindless dribble that some users of this forum have to say. To me this forum was meant to be a tool to which I could find out information and discuses the processes of reef keeping, a place where everyone was welcome to share advice and their experiences, weather they are wanting to start out, beginner, novice, intermediate, expert or god. I am sure the creators of this forum had a similar idea when they got together and spent countless hours designing a place where we could talk and share ideas about keeping fish and other aquatic life, not to mention that this is a free source of information for all of us to use. You might still be wondering about my use of the word “Godâ€, well it came to me that we have several users of this forum that consider themselves God when it comes to reef keeping I myself fall into the category of novice and have no problems admitting this that was the whole purpose for me logging onto this forum was to advance my knowledge in this field. Simple Explanations: Wanting to start out – Someone that knows you can keep fish alive in a tank but has little or no idea what is evolved in keeping aquatic life alive. Beginner – Someone who has read little information but grasps the idea of keeping aquatic life alive (may or may not have got hands wet yet) Novice – (Me) someone who understands the principles of keeping aquatic life alive with some hands on experience but when faced with a problem requires advice to correct this or requires information to best keep a system up and running. Intermediate – Has a good knowledge on the subject and can offer the above people advice via there experiences but still requires help from time to time. Expert – Has a good solid knowledge on the subject and can offer solid advice to others who require it God – They just know it all no matter what, if they are found to be wrong will argue to the bitter end, someone who just wont keep there mouth shut even if no one wants to know. You know what I mean its hard to describe but it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth the hairs on the back of you neck stand on end you just want to bash your head on your keyboard and yell F**K off W**KER you full of S**T. So that’s about it for me hope you all enjoyed the show and got at least something out of my dribble and will remember to use this forum to help us lesser reef keepers out with solid advice and not about who has the best prices and who can under cut someone else or who has the biggest skimmer cause it really helps know one it just starts fights between little men with little dicks who couldn’t fight there way out of a paper bag. P.S Sorry for the use of the bad words but someone had to say it
  11. I used to do a water change of 20% a month
  12. Ph = 8.1 Ammonia = 0 ppm Salinity = 1.024 Nitrate = 0.15ppm Nitrite = 0 ppm Phosphates = 0.1ppm Calcium = 420 Changed to bi monthly water chages of 10% to try and bring down nitrate
  13. I would say around 5inches at this stage and a very very happy wee thing. Feeding had been a wee issue he had been eating a special arowana food but they no longer bring it into the country so had to change it. That was rather simple starved him for 3 days then put in new brand food into tank some JBL stuff i was given a sample to try ( I can find out what it is if you wanted to try it out ) but he seems to like it so its all good. A good friend of mine has 3 arowanas, 1 black, 1 voilet fusion and 1 red tail gold they use shrimp 99% of the time and on the odd feeding pellet food. This little fish is paying for a holiday overseas will be selling him at some stage the price will be up there as only 3 in NZ and not to sure if anymore will be imported. This is my first arowana so still finding out all the info i can if i can be of anymore help let me know tanks size 36 - 18 - 18 ph 6.5, loads of plants ( they are a good filter ) temp 25 water turn over 400l ph so tank turns over twice an hour and a peat base ( good for plants and keeps ph down ) low ph is good so im told anything below 7 so you dont run the risk of ammonia

    Sump

Well after some thought and your ides i came up with a new design for a sump one with the skimmer at the start to remove organic matter and with bio balls underwater at all times i hope.... I visited a few shops over the weekend as i do and they all had different advice... one said yes to bio balls and one said no way dont use them for nitrate reasons so still confused as to use them or not..?? HELP HELP and another shop had air pumping thru the tanks at a huge rate and said it was good for the tanks i always thought air bubbles where bad..?? HELP HELP

    Sump

I thought i would let you guys have a look at it and tell me how far i have gone wrong, I havent put on the size as im unsure just how but this sucker is going to be yet. I keep reading about everyone saying if the power should go out that sumps have a problem of over flowing. If you look at the marine tank part and see how some of my water i have made red by my caculations if the displacement of that amount of water is less than the amount of water my sump can hold how can it overflow ?? Feel free to tell me what i should change and what i maybe have not thought of, thats the whole idea of you guys looking at it.... All comments welcome good and bad.

    skimmer

I have a berlin air-lift 60 or 90 not sure, I have a feeling that maybe berlin and redsea are made more or less the same ?? but anyways the skimmer i have requires and air pump for its operation ( such a pain in the ass ) If your looking at a skimmer spend the money and get one which uses a pump / power head to operate it. Takes the hastle out of trying to getting your air flow right and removes some of the guess work at least. I'm only new at this so maybe some others will post a reply to this and give you some more solid information. But I dont have a problem with my skimmer just a hastle to get it right and then your never really sure.
  21. I'm all for someone to express their opinion ( thats what my first post was on this topic )but ones opinion must be TRUE when it relates to someones business dont you think. I would be rather pissed if someone said something about my business on a web site which EVERYONE can look at, could be rather damaging to ones business.
  22. I seemed to have opened a can of worms so to speak !! Well what to say, I take my hat off to Debbie for her speedy relpy to the slander PIE's wrote. This decisson was about the best shop and in my travels and dealings REDWOOD's " IS " the best shop. Their was NO need for what PIE's wrote, and after reading Debbies post it seems PIE's needs to redeem whats left ( if any ) of his self respect and simply say sorry to Debbie, Bob and the redwood's staff. I have nothing but respect for the team at REDWOOD's and I'm rather angry that someone would slander there name without and due course. Well all know that dealing with live stock is a fishy business and somethings are just out of our hands, things happen to the best of us but you have to take the good with the bad. Well thats enough from me at this stage, I cant wait to see Pie's reply to this and Debbies post.. Pie's maybe your subject heading should be " SORRY " Thanks Anal Fin xoxoxo
  23. Just another rant... I cant say i have seen any shop in christchurch even come close to the prices redwoods offer, mind you even if i did i dont think i would buy from them the assistance redwoods offer is by far the best they treat you like a normal person and offer great advice.. Two thumbs up to them I say.... plus lots of gold stars ***********
