  8. Hi, I've developed some light scratches on the inner glass of my tank. This is from fine sand being caught up in the cleaning process. I've read that cerium oxide cleaning compound can remove it, but I can't find where it's sold in NZ. Can anyone have any suggestions about this or other solutions? Thanks
  9. Hi In the last few months I have started a cichlid tank. I was at Animates and saw that they were selling Fish Fuel Co. frozen, meaty, cube food for cichlids. I didn't know you could get this stuff. So it's okay to feed this to cichlids? Can I do it regularly, or should I just do it occasionally to avoid risk of bloat? Thanks Justin
  10. I have bought a second-hand Juwel Vision 260 (4ft) and I really want to set up an African cichlid tank. So far I have coarse-ish white beachsand which has been rinsed multiple times, a selection of rocks, heaters and filter (the stock Juwel filter) running and a couple of danios (borrowed from my community tank) in there cycling the tank for the last couple of months. Should I start with buying fry and growing them out? I'm presuming that will be cheaper. Should I start with say yellows and dems? In which order? And how many of each? I'm completely new to Africans but want to start this slowly and do it right! Any advice gladly received !

    Beach sand

I am setting my new 4ft African tank up and my local beach has quite coarse white sand. If I boiled it and rinsed it really well would it be safe to use?
  12. I have a 160 litre community tank. I normally have no trouble keeping my fish alive. I have an eclectic mix of angels, gourami, various tetra, golden barbs and harlequins. Each day now for the past week, I have an average of 2-3 fish die. Normally they are neons but I recently lost 5 conchu tetras, a couple of golden barbs and a harlequin. Nothing has changed about my tank recently except the addition of a brand new and more effective filter. I do regular water changes and my PH levels are pretty normal. Any feedback/ideas/recommendations would be gratefully received!
  13. Many thanks Squirt-I've just googled 'swim bladder' and this sounds exactly like whats going on
  14. Hi, I have a healthy community tank. My one molly has for the last few days been seriously 'listing'. It can't seem to stay horizontal, and is constantly battling to keep its nose from pointing downward. I have seperated it and fed it mushed up peas (in case its constipated), but this doesn't seem to have worked. In every other way it seems fit and healthy. Any one got any ideas? Thanks. :tears:
  15. Hi All I have a lovely tank of plattys, gollies, gourami, neons, angels, etc. Its my first ever tank. I hear so many different stories about how much and how often I should feed my fish; everything from once every 3 days to 3 times a day. They always seem to be hungry. My tendency is to overfeed. What should I stick to? Thanks!
  16. Thanks for the big welcome everybody!!! Can't believe how quickly I have become obssessed with my fish and tank . I have an AR-850 with 2 gorgeous swordtails, a a mama platty (who gave birth to four healthy, fast growing babies when I got her home :happy2: ) and 6 neon tetras. The tetras seem a bit aggressive to each other and the GORGEOUS TinytawnyKitten thinks it's because they need more school friends to play with so am buying some more tetras today. If anyone has some tropical fish (or just one beauty) that would go well with this combination, and would like to sell - I'd love to hear from you. I live in Houghton Bay Wellington
  17. I am new to all things fish! it has been my dream to have a tank since childhood - now have a lovely big one with Tropicals!! Much To Learn. Thanks to TinyTawnyKitten who made it all possible
