  1. Hi I will need a new pump for my 6 foot sooner or later Currently have Atman mp6500 23 months old http://deepblueaquarium.co.nz//product_ ... ucts_id=91 Ben from deepblue told me that the flow would down after a couple of years which it is starting to do slightly. Otherwise I’ve been really happy with it as it is very quiet and it was cheap and only 118 watt. Maybe I will just get another one Does any on have any experience with this? Is it quite http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 803488.htm I was also thinking maybe to just use a aqua one CF2700 inline as a return from my sump, but maybe not enough flow? Any other options I don’t really want to pay more than $300 and it has to be very quite. Have to consider the watts the lower the better. Thanks in advance
  2. It says that the drug dealers didn't pick them up for 2 days. I wonder how many were still alive when the came into the country, the cops prob didn't care about the fish they just wanted to catch the dealers. Looks like they were not charged with massacring the fish either - only the coke.
  3. http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/world/13010766/two-men-jailed-for-uk-drugs-in-fish-plot/ Sad &c:ry - more than 16,000 fish killed, its better when they stick it where the sun don't shine and kill them self!
  4. I'm a wee bit sore from running the Pukekohe 1/2 marathon yesterday (98 mins 30 seconds, new personal best - woop woop) So put my feet up this morning and made a bit of a spoof video of my Malawi's - Make sure you have the volume turned up. I have been neglecting the tank a bit cos of all the training so time to go clean some algae off the rocks and do a big water change.
  5. I Have a masssssive sheet 2.5 x 1.2 x .1 sheet you can have for free, but u have to come and pick it up from Pukekohe, reckon if you cut it into 3 you could easily fit it in a station wagon. Or strap it to a roof and drive back on great south road rater than the the motorway.... txt me 0211255111 if you keen.
  6. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Kitchen/Water-coolers-filters/auction-409057990.htm I've wondered before if you could diy one of these into an aquarium cooler, probably not powerful enouf for a 600L tho, there are dirt cheep, might be good for a nano...
  7. Hello My misses is starting to come around  so good luck to you
  8. Hey goat. I've been running my Malawi tank for about 9 months now. Just made an update vid (look below in my signature for link). The main mistake I made was hitting that buy now button to fast and wasn't 100% sure what I was buying. I got some "sunshine peacocks" but I don't know what they are, probably hybrids? They are still awesome looking tho here a pic More recently he has started showing some red in the anal fin as well. If you google sunshine peacock you will see that they are not sunshines. PM me and I'll tell you who the seller was. If you are looking on trademe just post the link here and some of the gurus :sage: will tell you if they are likely to be pure or not. Good Luck - Also I'm in (south) south Auckland
  9. When my 205 was rattling I found that the little rubber thingy that the shaft sits in was not seated well. I just put a bit of Vaseline on it and gently put it back and then it was sweet
  10. I think i just carefully and slowly but forcefully pushed it back and forth until the unit pulled out. The glue remained in the tank so then I used a glass scraper to get the glue off the glass. Just loading it with coarse sponge or bio noodles would mean it would not slow down.
  11. Yeah the Juwel filter units can be a pain. I had to do maintenance on mine every 2 weeks or it would slow down too much, also it never really did a good job. My powerhead stopped working 3 times the last time it happened it was out of warranty so I brought and external canister. I just had to cut gap out of the middle shelf to fit in, I made a wee stand to get it a bit higher up so the pump has less head (more flow). Then I heated the lid with a heat gun and it molded amazingly easily around the filters pipework so the lid still sits flush on top. Tank looks much better without the internal and the new filter unit only needs maintenance every few months. I am still using the Juwel heater, it is a pretty good heater you just need to get some suction cups for it. Also before sometimes the fish would get stuck in behind the filter and i would have to blow them out with a drinking straw.
  12. All done. I biffed the 240v fan back into the dark closest whence it came from and got a cheap 12V fan. I already had a variable 3.5 -12v adapter which was unused. :happy2: Thanks for the help guys Warren - your over my head dude :hail: I'm swimming in the shallow end when it comes to electrical stuff  , but i did learn something new, amps x volts = watts. Now only 3 more days off work and so many more projects to do ahhhhhh :digH: .
  13. Its exactly the fan in the link, only 14w so wont use much power maybe 7 cents a day if it was going 24/7. I think I won't need it running too much and in summer when the heaters in the sump do go much it can prob stay off. I'm going to put it in so it is blowing into the cabinet -so its not sucking wet air through as Ira pointed out and also I don't want a gross moldy patch on my wall.
  14. I have had a bit of a fungal problem in my stand. I put a cover over my sump a couple of months ago and it has really helped but not 100%. So I have brought a small fan kind of like for a computer. http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=YX2509&keywords=80+mm+fan&form=KEYWORD Question - Is it better to have the air flow sucking out of the cabinet creating -ve pressure or have it blowing in +ve pressure like a HRV or DVS in a home. I will prob just run it on a time clock a few hours per day. fanx Rob
  15. I ripped out my horrible ugly high maintenance Juwel filter in my 120L and replaced it with an fluval 205 and have been smiling ever since, the filter only needs attention once every 6 months and takes less than 5 mins. Also heard that CF1000 are pretty good and cost half the price of a fluval. You also get better water movement with the canister as you can suck from one bottom corner and shoot back in the opposite top corner.
  16. Man that's going to be a sweet setup. Ive got a massive 2500mm x 1200mm x 100mm sheet of poly that you could use for a background just pm me if you want it and we could sort something out - or if anybody else does? I was originally planning a poly background but for my 600L but I don't have the time, patience or artistic ability.......
  17. Still have to build the hood, have all the materials - just need to find some time Also want to re-arrange/glue down some of the rocks before the fish get too big. I have been thinking about them, they do look nice. Are the males and females the same colours? And how aggressive are they? I want some rustys idotropheus sprengerae but seem to go round in circles trying to find any. Are there any orange coloured Malawis easily available and not to agro Otherwise I think i will just stick it out as is they are starting to look so nice now. very hard to photograph the peacock with his fins plumed, he is my biggest but also hides a lot. He is starting to colour up and also seems to have a gf
  18. K, I just +1'd it 8) Here is the link again http://www.trademe.co.nz/Community/Mess ... 3&topic=18 If you look at the dogs category for example it is nice and tidy lots of categories for different breeds and its not like people collect 100's of different dogs (maybe some people do)
  19. Categories could be broken into the same groups as it is in the specialists corner in the forum title page, that would be real handy if you just wanted to browse one thing. It always takes ages to scroll the whole "fish" category Hey Sam have you looked at the topic you started on sunsun heaters recently and you will see my 1st hand experience with them. 100% dodgey. But some other sunsun stuff is ok, I have a pump and some bioballs that are fine.
  20. Ohh man I have had my API test kit for a couple of years but they were probably all expired before I brought them all from 06/07. Grrrr :an!gry why don't they just put the expiry dates on the bottles.

    Sunsun heaters

Thanks for directly answering my question.
  22. Cool thanks, thats the same stuff that make our hair, eyes and skin coloured right?. They weren't always like that is it like going going grey with old age? Also it only seems that the males have this. I like my glowlights they are always well behaved and school very nicely. BikBok - I have brought some prime and added it to my tank. You are right it is expensive per bottle but it will go a long way as 1/3 the rate needed of stesscoat. It says it detoxifies Nitrate but I assume it still remains present so can cause algae growth etc. Now what am I going to do with the 1L of stress coat I have left? Also the pet shop in Pukekohe only had API test kits like I already have so I didn't get one, I will get something else off the web. I have emailed Watercare Auckland about my concerns and I will post on what they respond to me. I based my complaint from the ministry of health drink water standards http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/0/12F2D7 ... z-2005.pdf In short - Nitrates in our tap water should be below 11.3 ppm long term and 50ppm short term. It is very bad for infants and unborn if high nitrates are consumed. This is also concerning for me as our nearly 9 month old daughter is gulping down cups of water these days.
  23. I normaly put the card down flat and look down through it while holding it above the colours. But I think titration tests give more accurate results. Anyway I just got side tracked tacking photos of my fish - Got a good one which is now my avatar 8) but now I have just realized I have to be at work in 6 hours time so best I go to bed. Will go buy a new test kit tomorrow and the post my results Thanks so far all
  24. If you look at the edges of the fins on these glowlights is that normal for them? Is High Nitrate a cause or something else? They weren't always like that, but I have had them for 18months. None of the other types fish in that tank have it. But i think the baby Giraffe cichlids iIhave may also have something similar.
