  1. Thanks man! Not sure if you can see from the photo but the twisted val is spreading from left to right and runners go all the way to the log on the right. They're only 5 or 6 cm long at the moment but they should reach the surface soon 8)

Sweet. You must have the balance just right....

Next time I'm in Rewa I'll drop you off some powdered ferts.

  2. UPDATE

Tanks progressing well, just need to sort the front right corner where it's a bit too shaded for glosso. Co2 comes on an hour earlier than before and seems to be making a difference.

    Needs a trim...

  3. He secretly is Amano :D

Nice work as usual. Ever thought about doing a large scale version?

I've thought about a bigger tank, but it's taken a lot of investment to get all the gear for this one and I've still got a shopping list! :slfg:

I'm currently house hunting and have a baby on the way, so my wife would throw me out if I went and bought a 120cm opti-white :o

  4. Changed the lighting today from 2x36w tubes to a 70w halide. The hairgrass at the back needs a trim but will wait until it's thickened up before shaping. Can't wait till the umbrosum grows in.... :)

  5. UPDATE

Planted to day some dwarf sag, dwarf hg and some umbrosum.

Added the new Co2 mist diffuser, amazing micro bubbles everywhere. I needed to tighten my Co2 fittings to handle the extra pressure required.

Water was a bit cloudy after a mega water change and a few spots of GSA..

    Crappy camera for this photo

  6. In a high tech tank, that lotus should grow fast enough that you can prune off the tallest half dozen leaves every week, at least. Pruning it will keep it bushy too.

You can rub off some of the algae, but the leaves could already be damaged if the light has been blocked or if you are rough when rubbing the leaves, it depends on the plant but usually it is best to remove affected leaves especially when you have invasive algae like staghorn. Hardy plants like anubias can be bleached but invasive algaes will penetrate the leaves.

Woops... must of posted at the same time

  7. Thanks, that's why I've got ambulia in there and a couple of other stems. It seems the twisted val is the fastest of the non-stem plants at the moment. I think it's because the microsword is covered in algae.

I swear one of my green lotus plants has doubled in size today. It's got the biggest leaves I've ever seen on one and it has at least 3 new leaves today.

On another note - is it ok to rub the dark green/black algae off the edges and tips of the leaves or do I run the risk of ruining the leaves and therefore ruining the plants?

Depends if there are plenty of unaffected leaves. I usually trim off any badly affected leaves so minimises the chance of the algae growing back.

If they're not too bad you could try spraying an excel solution on them when they are emersed during a water change and watch that algae die. :spop:

Sometimes it's just easier to sacrifice the bad leaves..... Usually the bad ones are in poor health anyway

  8. I used gumtree.com to find my job in London. it's a good idea to join a temp agency so hopefully you can earn some quick £'s as it's a strain on the pocket when you first arrive. For example my first job was in a warehouse earning £15,000 :tears: Then, found a real job and jumped to 27,000 quid

I've only been back for 18 months after a 4 year stint if you need any tips

  9. You should take the equipment out next time you photograph. Heater, drop checker etc.

Very nice tank but beauty is spoiled with them.

just a thought. Could look good as your screen saver then too

    Next time I will,

The heater will eventually go for good when I find a good deal on an external.

  10. Thanks, I hope so. re: spray bars - I've got 2 DIY overflows ready to go in the gaps on the back wall so I'll have 2 outputs from those at high water level to the sump and the cannister outputs are in the lower corners. I can't figure out how to fit the overflows in otherwise. There's one hell of a whirlpool effect going on on both sides at the moment but interestingly the plants are moving in a more natural 'breeze' motion. I did fear dead spots but I can't actually find any. I'll have another look tomorrow though.

If all the plant look like they are swaying in the breeze then you should be getting good flow. If you find tht algae is growing in a particular area then it could be a dead spot.

What turnover are you targeting with filtration?

  11. Check out Stage 1 of my minimalist 4ft tank stand journal. Hope you guys like it.

Good read. Will be watching this build, I like the lighting plans....

    A couple questions....

1/ What sort of filtration turnover are you going for?

2/ We have a serious lack of substate options here, which product are you leaning towards?

3/ Any ideas on your plant shopping list yet?

4/ The inline heater.... I've been looking for a good deal for a while but have been unable to find one, could you please pm me if you find one?

Sorry for all the questions....

    Cheers,

    Steve

  12. I have one small tank that has a very fine powder-like algae that grows over the glass. It's very easy to wipe off (as it's like a powder) but it covers the glass again in no time and I'm sick of it. I don't have any real plants in the tank and have another that doesn't have this fine algae problem in the same room. Algae rid doesn't work - any suggestions?

    Is it brown?

  13. Looks great!

The hairgrass at the back could do with being a little thinker towards the top, I'm not sure how you're trimming it, or aiming for, but just a suggestion. Also Once the rotala (?) Gets bigger it will look great.

    Very nice. !drool:

    Thanks!

I know what you mean with the hairgrass... I was thined it out to promote some new growth, it was also spreading into the glosso making a right tangle :-? On the back left had side it's really thick....

The rotala is looking a little sad.... might hack them right down to get a nice bush going

  14. Busy day....

Tanks had a big clean and plants an agressive trim. Glosso was looking tangled and messy so I've removed a few runners to allow space to spread.

Made up some 4dkh solution today for the drop checker, hopefully will get more accurate readings now.

I've ordered a new Co2 mist diffuser, ugly looking but great reviews.

A small stone added to the front, I think it adds a little more depth. Might add a few more...

  15. +1 on all of the above.....

I find the best way to spot dose with excel is to mix a solution of excel and water into a spray bottle, drain water from the tank until the affected ares are emersed. Spray the solution onto the affected areas and leave for about 5 mins. Once you fill the tank back up with water the algae will turn red and die within a day. Don't spot treat with excel on mosses though.

You'll need to address the causes of the algae or it'll be a constant battle. :sage:
