  1. that was a great tank is the kind of thing I'm aiming for with my new tank in planning looking forward to pics of your next one
  2. those are good photos my first fish had something like that and formalin didn't kill it so I ended up culling the fish. Then the second was like the ones in the photos and the drugs killed them (well so we think). I didn't get any more appearance of the worm after that but then I had treated the whole tank and all the cardinals had eaten some of the medicine. See what the others on here say but I think you should ring around and ask specifically for panacur and see what they say. If you aren't too far from Takapuna give those guys I mentioned above a call. If you get no joy send me a PM.
  3. I have access to lots of oak leaves, I suppose I could go over to the park and make some water with and without leaves and test the pH for an experiment. Does the presence of leaves lower it straight away and evenly or more/less as it breaks down?
  4. what does the leaf do? i've seen them online and wondered if it was some sort of gimmick for unsuspecting newbies like myself
  5. another inspiring thread from M. Deepsound! thank you thank you SamH your cat is up to no good there, I love that picture... the back foot climbing up too hahaha
  6. Diane, can you post a pic of what it looks like through the glass by any chance?
  7. i haven't got one yet,n am still planning and saving and rubbing my little paws together over all the choices! I was thinking about 30cm deep will be plenty
  8. I got some panacur from North Shore Veterinary hospital in Taharoto Rd in Takapuna. They were hesitant to provide at first as they don't know about fish much but if you explain a bit about the thread they will probably sell you some. At the time I was emailing back and forth with the vet/clinic and he was reading the thread. You only need a little bit, probably 50ml at the most unless you have billions of fish. If you get stuck you might be able to come and get some of mine that is left over. I don't know if that's the done thing to do with medicine so Jen please correct me if not.
  9. hmmm sounds too big for what I'm planning. thanks for the advice anyway
  10. where in NZ are you?
  11. any tips for if I end with that one Supasi?
  12. indian fern I'm not keen on much - i had it in the tank with the big filter so maybe that was to blame but i found it too messy is ludwigia helmxxx available in shops or do I get it from the creek? - otherwise known as Bushy seedbox or Rattlebox haha. I like the idea of a flowering plant in the aquarium. I was also harbouring secret longings for a tiger lotus so glad you mentioned that one probably a sponge filter - i haven't finished researching that part How does the duckweed become a pain? Ii had envisaged it floating about on the top and if it got too much I would scoop some out - does it get everywhere in the tank like java moss
  13. Hello I'm planning to set up a small killie tank over winter and would like to know what sort of floating plants are available in general. This is not me fishing for freebies, am just wanting to what is in this country as opposed to what I see in the library books. There haven't been many/any of these at the LFS when I've looked: Carolina Fairy Moss - Azolla caroliniana Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum Lesser Duckweed - Lemna minor (Is this what you see in the ditches or some other breed? If it's the same will it survive if I nick a handful and put it in a tropical tank?) Dwarf Duckweed - Wolffia arrhiza At this stage I've decided against using riccia as a floating plant as I would like to cover some stones with it instead. thanks in advance :bounce:
  14. I would be interested in one to put my husband in from time to time...
  15. check out the photos through this thread viewtopic.php?f=25&t=40813 if it looks like that they aren't external parasites and you need to treat for internal worms with fenbendazole (called Droncit or {Panacur at the vet) I still have some worm killer but it won't post unfortunately!!
  16. looking good, nice bit of driftwood in there now you have to sit on your hands or twiddle your thumbs and now wait for the plants to grow! 8)
  17. cool tank Dennis Mr Amano seems to have passed the stage of MTS and entered into Fricking Huge Tank Syndrome!
  18. The finished photo shows nothing of the work involved and how long they take to grow of course, but you do see how many water changes and CO2 etc he adds. High maintenance, some of them. And he has some huge tanks to scape, easier than scaping a smaller tank methinks. Anyway back to the subject, I didn't mean to hijack the thread!!
  19. this is from Auckland City Libraries. I did a quick hunt at Manukau Libraries and it's not there. You can request it for a fee from Auckland to Manukau thought. when I'm finished with it hehe
  20. you would like the book, no matter what the proper name is
  21. I have a book from the library by Takashi Amano, he makes aquascapes in the way of 'Nature Aquarium' theory and they are very inspiring. From small to huge tanks, some that start out like yours and some that end up like P44 Jungles. There are 3 books apparently but only 1 volume is available at our library :-?
