  1. Depends on what you want to keep and how much maintenance you want to do. There is a good reason why virtually all marine aquarium keepers avoid canister filters, and don't recommend them. Layton
  2. Yip, I'll get some pics up sometime this week. I've been meaning to for a while. Layton
  3. Ask the shops why they don't stock acro's then. There are plenty available to them. Layton

    Some Pics

Fragged it the day I bought it. Joeblog has a piece.
  5. I use Atco 400W ballasts. Lamp Specialists should be able to help you out with the 250's, the only thing is you have to wire up the starter, ballast, and cap yourself. I don't think they come pre assembled in a box. Layton
  6. JoeBlog can confirm the colour under "normal" lighting. It was a green blue, but has since turned more towards a solid blue (losing it's greeninsh tinge). Very similar to the first picture (which was from reefermadness.us) Layton

humilis is an acro species. The coral in the pic is a leather, some sort of sinularia by the look of it. Layton
  8. How was the turn out? Unfortunately I couldn't make it, busy with some work (and play) in Q-town. Layton
  9. Sometimes yes, but not necessarily. They are generally less reliable, and crap ones can cause a lot of problems with electrical interference. Layton
  10. Ice cap were the ones I was thinking of too. Venture don't do electronics, just magnetic. Any reason for wanting electronics over magnetic? Layton

    Chemicals.

the oxygen atom is the difference between a harmless salt, and an effective bleach. You don't want to be adding hypochlorite to your tank.
  12. Try this: http://lduncan.dyndns.org/java.html It should refresh faster (higher frame rate). You should be able to see the ethernet activity leds flashing. Layton
  13. ok ok, i know. It's a workaround until i can get the software I need compiled for the board. Come on.. it isn't that bad for 1 fps, using a dirty meta refresh. Layton
  14. Back up here: http://lduncan.dyndns.org
  15. Too dark now. I'll put it back up tomorrow morning. Layton
  16. It's the park out the back of the house. Layton
  17. As promised. A live video feed from ChCh, served by the controller. It's probably a bit dark, and it's just a cheap webcam so the image isn't that flash. It is better with more light. The "streaming" is not how it will be done. At the moment it's just a meta refresh ("client pull") which only allows a max frame rate of 1fps. I should be able to get 10 to 15 fps without to much trouble, using a "server push" approach. I just need to get php compiled for this to work. Resolution is set at 352 x 288, cause my upstream BW is limited. Here's the link again http://lduncan.dyndns.org Layton

    Dying brain?

Come to think of it, I have too. I was sort of thinking more along the lines of bleaching with the light comment, it doesn't look bleached. Layton

    Dying brain?

It's not bleached as far as I can see in the photo, so i don't think it's light related. Looks like tissue recession, which would point to more of a water problem, maybe too little flow? Your parameters look fine though. Layton
  20. You MUST do something about them now, if you want to have any chance of keeping your monti's. Regular Iodine dips. I've even done two copper dips. The recession has stoped, but they have almost killed both my big green monti cap, as well as the danae. I doubt that i have killed them, i'm sure they'll be back. These things are nasty! Layton

    Reefbase

What wasp said. When I had sand, I would (usually) vacuum it every week too keep it clean. Of course it depends what your keeping. If it's a few fish and some soft corals no problem. But hard corals may not like an aged sand bed so much. Layton

    Reefbase

any reason for having the bed so deep? Layton
  23. So true. Both systems have the same major flaw, which make them less than ideal for setting up a tank. Layton
  24. Hey Pies, have you got your phyto culture up and running yet? Layton
  25. I'll see what their pricing is like. They are not targeted towards medical applications like a lot of other companies i've looked at seem to be. So you never know, their pricing may be close to reasonable. Layton
