    I've got this: http://www.frags.org/memberfragdetails.php?fid=2307

    Frag prices

na I changed it to "nzreefs.com" because browser autocomplete drove me nuts when trying to access reefcentral.com. Layton
  3. I'm not at all convinced on the algae turf scrubber. It does not do the same thing as a protein skimmer by any means. It can't possibly. Layton
  4. The good thing about silica sand if used in a dsb is that it creates an oxygen gradient in a smaller depth than say coral sand does. So it can create differing environments for the differing bacteria you want to do particular jobs, without having to have 6" + of sand. This has nothing to do with the composition of the sand, it's the grain size which matters. However silica sand is almost always much finer than coral sand.
  5. I think it's been rated 7 stars. But the interesting thing is that they are NOT an exclusive hotel. Their rates are not as high are you think. They pride themselves on being accessible to a wide variety people, not just rich oil tycoons. I've looked into it before It also mentions that at the end of the doco on Discovery.
  6. Ha, I see it's about 200 meters up from the ground floor!!! (edit: no it's not, I can't read )
  7. I thought it was the Burj Al Arab. Dubai is near the top of my list of places to go, i'd love to stay in that hotel. Layton
  8. Other way round, fine on the bottom coarse on the top. And what's silicates got to do with silica? Silica sand is not silicate, and it is not bad at all. It's another one of those myths. Having said that i would never put a fine silica sand in a display. Blows around too much and even at only an inch or so, can easily create the DSB effect, good for nitrate, but a phosphorus time bomb. Layton
  9. I was thinking that too. The ones i've seen for sale recently were under or around 2 mil.

    New Skimmer

 not anytime soon with that price tag!
  11. I would not recommend a "live" sand bed in a display. I would never plan to create a sand bed which would go anaerobic in a display, too many problems with removing phosphorous. My advice would be go with a thin bed (1-2in) with a 2-4mm grain size. And keep it well vacuumed. Layton
  12. I thought he was a big fan of dsb and mud systems?

    New Skimmer

    more crude at the moment
  14. I prefer coarse sand (gravel) in a display because it's easy to vacuum and keep clean to avoid the DSB effect. Also less of a problem in high flow tanks, it stays put (most of the time). The sand you hear about on other forums is "Southdown" which is a carbonate based sand, as opposed to the silica based sands which are common here in NZ. Carbonate sand is white, silica sand is generally not. Layton

    New Skimmer

The air taps are closed a bit. Just breaking it in at the moment so the water level is at the bottom of the cup, i'll raise it a bit in a couple of days once it's settled.

It puts some of Pies' photos into perspective, he has the same skimmer sitting on a shelf! Layton

    New Skimmer

My new skimmer arrived this week. Plumbing was a bit of a mission, but finally got it connected yesterday.
  18. But then you'll all complain about a few little pylons. I was reading about different core designs the other day, The inital design for power plants was a "pebble reactor". It's physically impossible for it to runaway and cause a "meltdown", it self regulates. Then some idiot came up with the design which is used in just about every plant in the world today. Idiot. Layton
  19. We need to build that nuke plant up north. The power transmission system really is struggling.
  20. Not in their latest shipment! But yes, usually very good. They usually have very good fish, and their corals are getting better going by what they have in their current shipment.
  21. yip, got it home and put it under my lights and was really surprised at how nice it actually was. One side was browned out (probably the way it was positioned in QT, but the other was exactly the same colour as the photo. Layton
  22. Well Redwood had a Fiji shipment out last week, picked up a nice stag (nobilis), I haven't been able to get a good photo of it, so i've searched the net and found a photo which shows the exact colour, it looks to be the same species as well: Layton
  23. The problem is you can't buy these particular fellas. Layton

    Skimmer

Na, it has been sent down. It arrived on sat, but the depot was closed by the time I got there. Don't worry I'll post some pics, along with the new 4' frag tank i'm setting up, which will eventually be used as the sump for my new tank. Layton
