  1. I would be cautious with nutrient rich substrates. Yes plants love them but care has to be taken to ensure they don't leech too many nutrients into the water column. Some of the best success I've had with hairgrass has been in inert sand, plants get most of their nutrients from dosed ferts.
  2. A common misconception is that high light makes plants grow well. A balance of lights, CO2 and nutrients is what's needed to create a successful planted aquarium. The key to a great planted aquarium is making light the limiting factor. Many aquariums have plenty of light yet neglect CO2 and nutrients, leading to algae issues. Ideally, the CO2 would be able to easily keep up with light over the aquarium and nutrients would be sufficient to allow plants to grow healthily. You can create an excellent natural looking aquarium with little light, you just need to select appropriate plants, mosses, java fern, etc. But you mention you want a carpet, in which case you may need to upgrade your lighting. Just keep in mind that balance is key.

    T5 Lighting

That looks like a LOT of light to be putting over an aquarium I'm assuming you're trying to grow something in a very deep tank?
  4. I'm dosing EI on the safe side, initially the algae was only on the wood nearest the light but soon spread throughout the tank. Ideally I'd run 1 tube and make light the limiting factor but that just isn't possible with this ballast.
  5. Awesome, I'll go get the dark sheets and air pump now. Three days? More?
  6. Just the answer I was looking for  Does anyone have any helpful ideas? I think I might just go with a blackout.
  7. Every article I've read on the matter says that it thrives in high light conditions with too little CO2. I know my limit, I'm pushing it to the edge but not beyond.
  8. I know they love brown diatoms but do they love hair algae too?
  9. Hey guys, My aquarium has now been set up for just over a month and has been hit with all kinds of algae, most of which originated from a piece of wood I had in the tank. I've since removed the wood, but have been left with brown hair algae on almost all my plants. My tank is 75x35x35cm(100L) and I'm running 2x T5HO 24w tubes for 6hrs a day. So far I've increased CO2 to as much as the fish can handle, reduced the photoperiod down to 6hrs and added two wavemakers to increase flow. What can I do to get rid of this algae? Do I need to do a blackout on the tank? I'll do whatever it takes. Thanks!

Interesting time coming back from Warehouse Stationery this avo, traffic cams looked all good but I got stuck in heavy traffic on the way home, Legnum with front left tyre tucked under holding up traffic Also, old people have no idea how to race at the motorway on ramp lights, they always sneak ahead of me before the light goes green
  12. Who needs assets anyways? Cash in the pocket is the way to go

    Tell me about it :nilly:
  14. I've used Manado, it's fairly light but the plants seem to love it. Not a bad choice 8)

Up doing a graphics project because I lost my flash drive again today  Thankfully I lost it AFTER I'd printed the last of the work for my design and photography boards. And it turns out I'm much more creative at this hour anyways
  18. Sounds fairly typical of any event really. Personally I'd love to help out and participate in one (so long as it's not too far away).
  19. A national show? Would be awful expensive organising everyone in an agreed location. Regional might be better but then there's the issue of numbers. Perhaps a fish show in general would be a good start.
  20. That's not entirely true Joe, you also need to account for the water the fish, ornaments, substrate, equipment and fish keepers arms will displace
  21. 210cm x 60cm x 60cm /1000 = 756 litres 8)

I have to agree with you on most of that Joe. Although professional athletes do put a lot of time, money and effort into their chosen sport and become the best at what they do, I can't stand most sports either. It just gets repetitious all too quickly for me.
