  1. oh sorry typo, it 24/25 degrees! the fish had been in the tank for about a month a suppose. my cats have taken more of an interest lately so that could of contributed. have to train them better before i get a new one.
  2. well pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, and GH is all ok. temp at 34-35. so unless he objected to my plant supplement i can't think what else it could be. must just be a random thing. ill cover the gaps before i get another.
  3. so you don't recon its a water quality issue then?
  4. I second corys. a whiptail would work too i think if the tank is big enough.
  5. bolivian or butterfly rams would be my bet beautiful fish! and small and peacefull: bolivian ram: butterfly ram:
  6. I woke up this morning to find my whiptail dead on the carpet. he must of climbed out the back where the cables exit the tank. what i don't know is why. I have heard that they will escape a tank if the water is not to their likeing ie. if you use copper-based medicines, but i had not. I will take a water sample into hollywood and see if anything is amiss. I may have to cover these holes to prevent it happening again.
  7. Lots of wood is good, rocks really don't suit, some small ones ok for variety. good foreground plants: chain sword and dwarf chain sword. a big sword is good as a center piece. Ive also got some crypts and val, not south american but close enough. any other questions i'm happy to help but ive only had mine going for a couple of months.
  8. mine is doing the same thing, got some nice plantlets already. I assume that if it goes above the water line and flowers it has a chance of sexual reproduction (if cross polination occurs with another flowering sword) but if it stays under the water it will be a clone of the mother plant? I also noticed that if you trim the stalk just after a node it will get down to growing a new plant immediatly, good if the stalk is outgrowing your tank.
  9. the only plant i tried in brackish was java fern and i just chucked it in there, no problems. other plants might be more tricky not sure.
  10. thanks thats what I thought. they do go nuts for live food so maybe i just need to get more, better all round anyway! how are they with frozen food?
  11. Hi, I have 9 cardinal tetras in my south american tank and I was wondering if they can be trained to eat from the surface? my geophagus tends to eat or scare them away from the food as it sinks but they won't eat from the surface. Is this just a fixed behaviour or is it because there is too much current at the suface? thanks
  12. ive had surprisingly good results with a Geophagus jurupari, he eats them when they come down to the gravel at night. but again they get pretty big, albeit slowly. A long-term solution is to sell the clowns and get some smaller loaches. probably easier to sell when they are still pretty small (take some huge clown loaches into a store and they will know your desparate!)
  13. yum yum goodbye guppies! many a year ago i mixed tadpoles with Axolotls. I think i managed to rescue a few tadpoles....
  14. generally paradise fish should be keep alone. You can keep them with other fish if your carefull but they certainally won't be friends! A male will fight another male paradise fish, and a male can hassle a female to death if she dosn't feel like breeding. I've never keept one in a heated tank, but they can live up to 28 degrees according to the book im looking at. They like plants and caves, and not too much current. I'm sure someone else will have some more experience than me though. a fun thing you can do is place a small (clean) mirror in the tank for short periods of time (no more than 5mins i would say) and watch the fish display to the reflection. they will even change colour! I suspect males would be more interested in a reflection than a female.
  15. Ive got a regal whiptail for around $30 and she's a decent size. not sure on the species though, think it's Sturisoma monopelte, but i can't find any decent pics of one to check. Awesome fish, she never hides, just chills out on a leaf or wood. eats everything too even flake!
  16. They have several for sale to 'approved customers only ' at Hollywood fish farm in Mt Roskil at the moment. Price on addmission
  17. hay everyone, new to the forum, just getting back into aquariums after a couple of years break. i had an archer fish before and and wanted to get some again but nobody seems to sell any. I live in Auckland so my first port of call was Hollywood fish farm but they don't have any and don't know when or if they will get any. I've also tried animates but they don't seem to stock any brackish fish. any ideas where i could try next? thanks!
