  1. Hi I Am new to cichlids but have had tropicals for a while, the other half suggested a new cichlid species tank upstairs yesterday and I didn't need a second push, but just wondering what are the best dfish to start with, and the staff member in the lfs said we would need to buy all the cichlids we were going to have at once and put them all in the tank at the same time to avoid arguements over territory, Is this correct or were they making sure they got the sale.

I have purchased no fish yet, as I need to sort out a tank and stand and some rocks first. just need to decide which tank I want to use, or whether to buy a new one  which sounds like the better idea to me :D

Not sure whether this belongs here or over at beginners corner.

    Cheers B

  2. If I was to breed guppies for the intention of selling them as live food to those who would want it, what problems could I run into other than the moral issue of breeding for food.

If I was to do this:

Who would be interested in purchasing them?

What would you expect to pay or be a reasonable price?

would you be prepared to ship at own risk(due to me being in wellington)?

The reason I ask this is that I would love to breed guppies but don't want to find myself stuck with lots of them and not be able to move them on.

    Any other comments welcome.

  4. Am looking at the possibility of a cold water marine tank, but was wondering what sort of equipment i would need, bearing in mind money is a problem as there is not enough of it in my bank account.

Also how often would i have to change the water to stop if going off/stagnant?

do i need to do anything special.

I would look at raiding a rock pool if it is legal and having crabs?, shrimp, anenome and small fish, is it possible.

  5. welcome neopole,

i'm sure you will find the answers to your questions on this site or through a member and being a tropical freshwater freak myself I can be of no assistance other than to welcome you here.

most people congregate in the chat room round about 9-9.30 each night

    Ballistic

  6. when you say blue rams are these also called bolivian rams or bolivian butterfly rams. If so can you give me any tips or point me towards a website with lots of info on breeding these as i am moving my platties out and the bolivian rams into my breeding tank.

    cheers,

ps all i could see were the famous red x's

  7. Well one of my platties has had some more little one's only about 3 weeks ago i had my first lot of about 30 and now i have another 20-30.

It is so much fun, except I lost my breeding male the other day as he was quite old and only have one male now to four females.

Babies from the first lot will be listed in private trade and exchange if any one is interested.

  8. Have had my first lot of baby platties for about 2 weeks now, just have been busy with work and a almost 3 month old, have about 30 at the moment and when they are older would be willing to trade for other useful things like java moss or other fish.

But at the moment am quite content to look after my new babies, will post a pic as soon as i get one, will try tonight.

Will post in private trade and exchange when they are older.

  9. I have a couple of platys who can't be too far away from giving birth, would it harm them or the unborn young in anyway if i moved them to another tank that I couldn't gaurentee similar conditions in, and the tank is also smaller.

i have a tank with two males and four females in and was hoping to move the pregger platys to lessen the number of fatalities due to hungry parents.

    Will this work?

    Cheers

  10. thank you all for your comments, it is very satisfying to create new setups and seen as this tank is so different in shape from my old tank.

the heater caryl is up quite high as in about a month or two the plants will have grown amazingly and you wont notice the heater at all. I t quite a good plant that i ahve got, i got a peice of it from my dad and it just goes mental, yet when i take it to the lfs no one has any idea of what it is at all, but the changes it makes between tank conditions are amazing, in the first photo the plant to the right of the red borneo sword is the mystery plant and beleive it or not the plants at the back of the tank are the same plant.

    cool huh

yay, my baby daughter was born thursday morning 2.25am, so may be a little preoccupied for a little while.
