I have three, and they are aout 3.5 years old, and around 5 inches long. Might try the leaves, I haven't tried that before.
-
Yea, they love the sand. I'm forever trying to find ways to clear the water of particles that they continually sift up and put in the water column. I'm currently investigating a small filter-wool type setup on a power head, but not having much luck. I dont want anything too big in the tank, so an internal filter is not an option, and increasing flow from the Fluval 405 (placing a higher powered in-line pump) doesnt change much. But yes, they love the sand!

Hey all. This afternoon/night, for the better part of an hour, my earth eaters were 'lip locking'. My guess is its a pre-mating thing??? The PH buffer in the tank (sand) keeps the PH at a little above 7, so they shouldnt actually breed due to the higher PH. Anyone else had this experience? Seen it all before?

Ok guys, so any idea of whether I should have it pulling from the tank and pushing into the canister filter, or pulling from the canister filter and pushing into the tank? My guess is after the canister filter, therefore if there is an issue with pressure in the canister filter (due to the higher flow rate of this pump) it will most likely cause the canister to suck in air, which I would prefer, compared to it pushing water out of the canister. I would prefer it to do nether, and if it does one, Ill try to fix it, as neither is desirable. So any ideas?
-
All good, Ill give it a try when I get it fixed. Any ideas on who to go to for parts?
-
Yea, like you said, it will get as hot as its going to get in a couple of hours. What do pumps do when they die from heat? Like do they smoke and catch fire or just stop working?
-
And....I just realised when I got it out of the box, the reason I stopped using it...I broke the ceramic impeller part a while ago. So, I will be needing a replacement, so does anyone know of where/who supplies replacement parts for ViaAqua? Distributors/Suppliers etc. I cant remember where I got it from!

Yea, the over-heating issue is what I am worried about. I really want to know for sure before I leave it going while im not at home.

Ok, So after a while of thinking, I realised I have a ViaAqua VA-2600 here at home, and I was thinking that this might be able to be run in-line. Did a bit of looking around, only to become very confused. I have found 2 sites saying that it can be run out of the water, and 1 saying that it has to be submerged. Does anyone have one of these pumps, so that they might be able to give me some advice? Also, does anyone have the contact details of ViaAqua, or their distributor in NZ? I thought I could ring them and find out, however, I cant even find their contact details! Can anyone help? Much appreciated.

The bubbles travel up, hit the glass, then travel along the glass until the edge (as the glass is not perfectly level), there is about an inch gap all around the glass (between the edge of the top and the edge to the side of the tank). Its not sealed to the point of holding pressure. But it did save the tank in the earthquakes. After a minute of shaking I only lost 2 litres of water  At some stage I will get around to putting some pictures of the tank on here.

Oh, and the flow is considerably less than what the filter used to be when it was under a tank. Due to the fact that each pipe is 2.5m long before it enters/leaves the pump does not help. As I said, everything seems to be difficult with this tank.... Hence, why I am looking for an external pump.
-
Yea, that's part of the problem, the holes are not sized correctly (1/2 inch from memory, its hard to see, they are under the tank about 1cm off the floor). Another problem that I would have fixed if I had another chance.... That, and the height of the tank is only about 40cm, so there is not alot of downward pressure... anyway... Ehiem pumps have in-line models???
-
Airpump creates a positive pressure inside the tank, pushing bubbles through it, and up round the edge of the glass. Enough to keep everyone alive

Fish-Tank-Coffee-Table. You can see it from all four sides, and look down into it (the top is recessed into the water so there is no condensation). If I ever had the chance to go back, I might not have done it, every part of it has been an issue from the start...

Yea, I have thought of that (sump), its more the fact that the pump in the canister at the moment is having to work to both pull the water in and push it out, rather than having it naturally siphon from the tank when it is below it. A sump tank (which would have to sit at the same level as the tank) would not fill fast enough naturally with the flow that comes from the tank, (hence why the canister filter is struggling at the moment), in other words the pump would run dry very quickly. Due to the uniqueness of my tank (or retard-ed-ness) I am very limited in my options, which is why I am looking for an in-line pump which would fix all my problems.

Hey Everyone. Due to my unique tank set-up (being 2 inches off the ground and all), my canister filter is in a box beside the tank, (not under like its meant to be). Hence I have a few flow problems. Does anyone know of a brand of aquarium-sized in-line pumps. I.e, not the type you put in the water, the type that sit out of the water and have an in and out pipe. I realise that some pumps have an adapter so you can attach an "in" pipe to them, however due to heat, I think most of them are still supposed to be submerged. Any ideas?

That's all good to know thanks guys. Will I have any issues with them being aggressive towards each other?
-
Thanks fish guy. Im more wanting to prevent it from happening, that trying to get it to happen. That link is very good thanks.

Hey everyone. Just wanting to know if anyone knows the ins and outs of cross-breeding plecos. The reason I ask is I may have a couple of gold nuggets lined up, however I don't want it to cross-breed with my Bristlenose which are already breeding. Does anyone have any ideas about this? I am guessing if someone has had a breeding pair of Bristlenose and a breeding paid of gold nuggets in the same tank they might be able to shed some light on the topic. Also, any ideas about fighting with each other, like between breeds? There is a lot of space/wood/plants within the tank. Cheers.

This was just more theory than anything. I was meaning use something like ceramic or sintered glass for the media rather than live rock.
-
Hello Everyone. I am just wanting to confirm what I am thinking here. You don't need to run a cannister filter with live rock, as the live rock does the filtration. However, if you were to run one at the same time as having the live rock, the live rock would still work, it would just effectively give the system more media for the bacteria, is this correct? If you are to have fish only, can you run a cannister filter instead of live rock? Or have some live rock (less than reccomended) and run a cannister filter? Just having a chat to a friend today, pretty sure we got it down, but thought id ask these questions to cement what we are thinking. As at the moment I only carbon in my cannister filter (sometimes).

Hey Everyone. Has anyone had any experience with placing Jurupari Earth-eaters with Geophagus altifrons/surinamensis (Red Striped Earth-eater). I know the Red Striped are more aggressive than the Jurupari, but just wondering if anyone has had any experience?

Cool all good to know. Sorry I didn't mean to say I was going to do it, we were just talking about what the tolerances of temperatures they could take. Getting stuck in pools of water in the sun etc etc. Thanks Guys!
-
Hello all. Just a quick question, has anyone had any experience with Whitebait in a tropical tank? I am wanting to know what the temperature tolerances of them are, but cant find much online. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hello Everyone. I have been given an aqua one tank. The person that gave it to me has previously used something that has stained the glue blue. What I am wanting to know is, the glue which is stained is in the join. Can I cut this glue off with a blade? Obviously leaving the glue between the glass still there. The part I am talking about is: When you are glueing the glass and you run your finger up the seam, the extra glue that spreads out and makes the right angle 'smooth' (kind of semi circle-ish), if you know what I mean, rather than the glue in the actual seam. Does this 'extra' glue provide any extra strengthening? I am thinking not. Does anyone have any ideas?
