  1. Chris.L said Hmmm better add another, or maybe divide the breeding tank
  2. 6 foot reef tank 4 foot discus tank *2. 1 for breeding, 1 for display working on the 4 footers, 6 foot when we move to a bigger house
  3. To be honest I don't know. The LFS got them as part of deal to buy a new display tank, they are from unknown parents in that tank. They are showing quite a lot of blue on the fins and around the head now they have settled in, the littlist one has very definate stripes, and another seems to be developing into a light almost solid blue. So will see as they grow.
  4. Thanks Still pretty basic, but at least it works.
  5. Done, started a site on a place called zero catch, there were adds every where so I changed to geocities. http://www.geocities.com/markrichardgilchrist/ Pics of fish is in hobbies section Hope it works now  let me know what you think Mark
  6. Makes me very jealous too. Went to Redwoods for the first time on a rare trip up to Christchurch, I was amazed. The range of fish, tanks, equipment and accessories dwarfed anything we have in Dunedin. Saw the Arowana, could not sleep at night from worry if I brought a fish that expensive, not that I would ever have $6000 spare. SIGH!!! will be going back next time i'm in Christchurch
  7. Can you tell me what its called and who makes it. Might be handy to have a bottle in the cupboard if LFS can get some for me
  8. I found when using H2O2 that there was no visible change to the algae, it just stopped growing (dead) and was easier to manually remove. Mark
  9. Add my thanks to you all as well. Mark

    cold tank

Personally I do not normally turn off the heaters when doing a water change, however all the heaters I have brought had on the packets a warning to turn off before putting hands in the water. The only time I can see this being a problem is if there is damage to the insulation of the heating unit (or filter for that matter) the easiest way to damage the heater is as Caryl said breaking the glass, it would also be possible to damage the cable where it comes out of the tank, (rough edges on glass). I would consider it worthwhile to turn off the heater and pull it out for a visual inspection say every six months.
  11. I Have never worn gloves and do not intend to, however I agree with Aqua relating to keeping hands out when I have healing cuts. As another issue, if this is a bacteria would a UV sterilizer light inline with the filter kill it.
  12. Hello Back from holiday, everyone is well and happy. I am trying to start them on flake food, so far tetras are happily eating (as always) and discus are grudgingly sampling. Thanks again Mark
  13. Without wanting to be cynical, I have always thought about starting a marine tank and a clown fish would be wonderful. The point being that if in a year or so there are cheap setups being sold off I would be a happy man Mark Although I do feel sorry for the fish that are neglected and kittens, puppies, turtles, etc.

    Hi to all

Hello, a bit late, but welcome Tracey Sounds like you have some great tanks Mark
  15. Thanks for the advice, I will leave them unfed for the 4 days and then try some of the other foods I have that have been ignored up until now. Thanks again Mark
  16. Fair comment Shilo, I just wanted to make sure people were careful. Mark
  17. Hi Guys Thanks for the welcomes suemack, welcome to you as well. Its a great resource and everybodies so helpful.
  18. Sorry should have said also If you are thinking of using H2O2 in an occupied tank read everything the krib says and use extreme care, this has the potential to kill everything in your tank. As I said above I have used it in a limited manner but always out of the tank with equipment that was well rinsed a couple of times before using it again.
  19. Sorry I know this is late but heres my two cents. The Krib has an article on using hydrogen peroxide H2O2 as a topical treatment for black hair algae, when I had this algae I was never game to use it in the tank, but did use it to great effect in a bucket for cleaning up the filters and driftwood. http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Algae/bleach.html http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Algae/hyd ... oxide.html
  20. Hi I have five juvenile discus (about 1/3 to 1/2 size) and am going away for 4 days. They have been eating only frozen bloodworms up untill now, which is what the pet store was feeding them. My question is would I be better not to feed them for the 4 days or set up an automatic feeder to supply them with a small amount of another dry food that they might or might not eat. Thanks in advance Mark
  21. I have to agree with you Goldie, I said it earlier in this thread, I am just amazed by the people and the amount of information here
  22. Hi Goldie I thought you were talking to me Just wanted to check. Mark
  23. Hi Goldie They are good to watch swimming around together aren't they. The one you have left must be lonely, I hope you can find some nice companions. If you do, can you let me know where as I might be making a trip up that way in a week or so and it would be good to have some inside knowledge on the good places to go.
  24. Hi Chris Yes I do have pictures and am trying to get a web site going again to show them on. Hopefully soon. They are about the size of the bottom of a coffe cup and are very plain, just blue on the fins and around the head.
