I used to have 6 Khulis - they are adorable, mine all got pretty big When looking up close they have humourous whiskers too. Be prepared to not see them much, as they love to hide in caves and under/in ornaments and driftwood. they love to pile on top of each other! And yeah, mine also would do the crazy fast figure 8 laps up and down the side of the tank haha I have read that they do like bare bottom tanks/fine sand over coarse gravel as it can damage their delicate smooth underbody.

Well i am a hobbist i dont want them for breeding i am just aksing, if you put 5 or so brothers and sisters in one tank, when they grow up will they breed? (As i dont fancy lots of babies!) But i have no idea what species inbreed

Hey there, I have a bunch of Platty babies in a fry tank, they have been eating like warriors and are a bit bigger than a standard neon at this point. What size/age should i wait to rehome them? thanks Ami

Thanks for the reply Caryl! I think i will go down to the LFS's and see if any want them for free when they are big enough and also enquire about trading my female for a male... I can imadgine they get offered them all the time.. Another option i guess is giving them away via this site and trademe. The fry are so cute! Couldnt bare to gather them up to feed to a bigger fish or anything really...i just dont have it in me! It will be great seeing them grow! I might pick up and start a fry tank soon.. Ami

Heya, I have three platys in my communitly tank (130L which has 3xPlaties, 1 Honey Dwarf Gourami, 1 Siamese Alge Eater and 10 Neons) I figured 2 of the three platies are a pair as they are always together, ocassionally the male chases the female, and neither of them ever really hang around with the third platy in the tank. Anyway, they have been camping out in a driftwood cave for a while, i know they have been up to stuff... ..then today, when feeding my fish i notice fry in the tank. Little orange guys about 4-5mm in length! Ive counted over 10 at once, i have no idea how many more could be hiding too... So, i always knew Platies were livebearers but i thought my other fish would eat any fry, obviously that didnt happen. Now im a bit worried i am going to be overrun with fish! I notice the female is huge again!! What options do i have? Will leaving the fry in there result in them surviving now they have reached this size? Any tips or advice will be muchly appriciated! I used to work with a guy from Lau, who said he used to fight Bettas alot (much to my horror ) He said he would train his up to be stronger by putting it in a special bowl and spinning it with it swimming against the current. (i dont know how true that is or how gullible i am!) But yes, im a vegetarian and hate animal fighting so it made me pretty sad. Bettas are so beautiful, it sucks so many of them are mistreated

Im pretty sure some people on here have made pretty sturdy and cheap stands using bricks stacked up, with a specically cut/sized peice of flat wood on top, polystyrine of course, and then just putting a bit of material around the bottom to hide the big bricks. Might be a cheaper option than a store bought stand?

Heya, I have a built in Aqua one hood filter, and also a second filter in the tank with a spray bar which agitates the surface (its a tall tank). I have 3 platties, 2 Honey Dwarf Gouramis and 2 flame tetras (those guys are being re homed soon as they need to be in a school) Probally a few GBA;s soon hopefully too. I might see if my flatmate is interested in doing the maintenance for me, im not going until september so i have a bit of time to train him up. So maybe a water change each week - 5 in total and feed twice a week...

Yes i have the Aquaminder - you can get them from HFF and on trademe... Pretty much a little consol on the side of the tank, with a wire which goes in and suction cups to the glass. You can program a max and min temp, and if the water reaches either of these an alarm sounds! You can also program weelky water change reminders, filter mainteneance reminders, and system check reminders. Pretty handy! I paid about $25 for mine. Altho if you have MTS then it could be very expensive..

Hey All, I am going on a five week Euro Holiday in September... so i need to sort out what i will do with the maintenence of my 130L planted community tank.. I have a timer on the light. I have an aqua minder which sounds an alarm if the temp raises or lowers below or above my set temperates...so i can warn my flatmates about that.. Im keen for some advice on how much maintencene and feeding i should ask someone to do for me... I was thinking maybe a feeding 2 times each week and then maybe 2 30% waterchanges I have to ask my flatmate really nicely if he will do this for me.... the only other option is to buy an automatic feeder and program that, then hope no water change for 5 weeks wont kill everything.. but im not too sure on the idea of that... let me know what you would do!
