  1. That's a wee bit of a drive ;p The cleaning sounds good Cheers again
  2. I'm pretty clever eh. Cheers for all your help man - appreciate it
  3. If we grab it from the beach, do we need to worry about - pollution? We live in Te Atatu, or the Salt? Also do we need to boil it or anything, to get rid of any chemicals - or can we go for fold and stick it in? I am an impatient soul... Cheers spoon
  4. Thanks Caryl. Lol - I thought he was j/k in some way, but so hard to tell tone via type And I think we have damn nice floors.... I think that small cap is a non - issue - I think it does some kind of alternative flow to the piping in the tank. One 'last' question - does this tubing look alright - I have visions of the water surging through and the tubing going everywhere... Here are the tubes - captured with flower mode!!!! We have jammed the green tubing into the pipe, and managed to screw the fastener onto it a little, sorry for the dumb questions, but I pretty much suck ;p Cheers!
  5. Heh thanks. The planted aquarium you were helping me with has been put on hold while we set up this tank - am actually going to get a slightly bigger (than my 60l) planted tank to open my options a bit. What do you mean 'macro/flower button' - confused :8
  6. SunSun - Think it is a chinese import, and they copy the other brands - although I could be wrong...
  7. This is the piece that is stumping up - it is obbiously some kind of cap - does anything jump out as an obvious place to put it?
  8. Good succinct answer We have just set up the filter, and have one final piece which we aren't sure what to do with (the instructions weren't fantastic. I'll post a photo in a few minutes if you can take a quick look
  9. Thanks again Morc - apreciate it I will no doubt hassle you again over the next few days ;p
  10. Hey, thanks Smidey, thanks Caryl. Do I put the rings in every basket, including the top one? I ask, because the rings will be kept in place somewhat, in all the lower baskets, by the basket above each one. Whereas with the top basket, there seems to be more room for them to float aorund. Cheers
  11. Hehe... you da man 1) How deep would you have the sand? I just chucked 25kg in and it didn't go as far as I would have thought - maybe an inch deep for most of it. Will that suffice? 2) I am still tempted to add a Golden Sev, but think I could possibly regret it. If I did add one, should I wait a couple of weeks for the cycle to establish, and then add one of a similar size to the small Oscar? 3) Any ideas for layout? You seem to have a good eye... I have already put some black sand down. I was thinking of then getting quite a lot of wood in there, with a focal point maybe just left of centre. I was going to add some stones and try for a couple of plants, with the realisation he'll probably just tear em out. 4) Wood seems really expensive, which is really odd. You know of anywhere/one who sells it cheap? I might post photos Cheers mate
  12. Hi guys, Thank you for your previous help. My partner and I have got a 330l for our future Oscar. We realise that is under what some would have, but is also more than what others would... 1) The LFS said we wouldn't need to cycle the tank... true? They said with the fish being so small, in such a large tank, it would be unnecessary, just go light on the feeding and keep on adding stress zyme. 2) Our tap water comes out at pH 8-8.2. I was reading that Oscars aren't too fussy about pH; however, the fish would go through a bit of shock if it came from a lower pH store and was then dumped in our pH water. So I thought I would use chemicals to lower the pH to 7 or so (will ask the shop what they have their pH at), and then the fish will gradually acclimatise to the higher pH as we do water changes. Good idea or flawed thinking? 3) Do I need to add oxygen to the tank? I have never bothered before since my other tank is planted (a project that is on hold while I set this up). Cheers in advance for your help!
  13. Hi guys, I am trying to set up this canister filter for what is going to be my Oscar tank (hehe the beloved decided she wants one... who am I to argue!). Inside it has four 'baskets' each with a foam filter in it. I am not sure where to put the media? I have 'ceramic bio rings' and 'active carbon'. Do I need to use both? I gather the bio rings helps with the biological processes, but is the carbon just for medicating, i.e. I don't need it unless medicating? Where should I put this media? i.e. What should I put in the top level? Next one down? Next one down? Bottom? Do I take the foam out if I am putting rings on a level? And how many rings should I put? Do i fill up an entire level or two? I hope those questions made sense... Cheers in advance!
  14. Yeah thanks guys. Maybe I'll try buy off a NZ breeder some time - see if it makes a diff. Cheers
  15. You offer a persuasive argument... Can you please check your PMs... just asking about one of your tanks. Cheers
  16. Came back to a dead fish today; makes you wish you euthanased it I think I am going to skip on Dwarf Gouramis - since I bourght two from the same store, and they both died within a couple of weeks. It also makes me a little suspicious about the store... Cheers for the advice guys
  17. Thanks guys - I was thinking of the 300-350 range; I just don't think I can fit 450. Guess I'll just have to have a nice big planted aquarium instead! Cheers for the prompt responses.
  18. Hiya, I know this question gets asked a lot, and I have researched extensively and got different answers, which is why I ask here! I am thinking of setting up an Oscar tank, and heard you can have them in as little as 50g (200l right?), but isn't that a little on the small size? What size tank should I get to house 1 Oscar and some less signifcant pals (say 3-4 severenum and a pleco type)? Apart from the litres, what minimum depth and height should I be looking at? Cheers for your help
  19. I wouldn't have any idea whatsoever Does seem happy though...
  20. 2 Platies 3 Harlequin Barbs 3 Neons 1 Bristlenose Cat I haven't seen any signs of unrest though. There is a log in the tank - I haven't seen him hitting it or brushing up against it though. Nothing else sharp. Any ideas? Cheers for reply
  21. Hi guys, Can you please give me advice re: this gourami: He has what appears to be wounds or lesions on his body - not caused by fighting; scales and skin appears to be missing. His behaviour seems fine. The ammonia/nitrates/nitrite reading were all fine. I am concerned about the pH, the water comes out of the tap at a pH of ~8-8.2 (measured at night - I heard pH goes up later in the day?), but hovers in my tanks around 6.8. Anyone know what's wrong with him/what can be done? I appreciate any advice. Cheers
  22. Cheers Cookie. I just tested the tap water (mid-day instead of night) and the result was definitely lower, around the 7.6 range; hardly scientific though. Will check again earlier in the morning and see if the pH continues to drop. I'll mess around with the quantity of water changes to minimise the impact of the pH fluctuations. I'm struggling to keep my pH above 6.6 (waaaaay better than 6 and below) - is that an issue? Or will most fish be happy in the 6.6-6.8 range? Cheers ears
  23. Ok, I have added in a bunch of crushed shells. I think this has stabalised the pH somewhat, as it seems to hover around 6.8 now. My concern is the tap water; testing it at night (I heard it becomes more alkaline at night?) gives me a reading of 8ish (can't quite tell between 8 and 8.2). That seems very high. Is this harmful to the fish as I do 30% weekly water changes? If I take the water in the morning will the pH be significantly lower (haven't had the chance to test in the a.m)? Should I cut down the size of my water changes, in order to minimise any pH fluctuation. Thanks guys
