    Finding Nemo

or you could use it as an excuse to set up a marine tank
  2. The maker is AZOO and it is called brush hair algae killer. It is an asian company, and unfortunately I am unable to read their language. They have a website www.azoo.com.tw I guess the tw suggests it's made in taiwan. Good Luck, as I said earlier I was told at Jansens that they were banned from importing further bottles of this product. If you want to order a bottle from Jansens (not sure whether they do this but you can try) there phone number is (09)625-7915.

    Finding Nemo

While at Jansens I spoke to a friend of mine who tells me that they already have clown fish on backorder because of the current demand. sad news for all these fish that might not go to good families.
  4. couldn't wait. Went into Jansens mt eden and purchased a bottle of brush hair algae killer. apparently this is the product they have been talking about. but they are not allowed to import it any more. there were five bottles left yesterday (behind the counter) and they cost $23.60 each. 15mL bottle containers, and my calculations suggest that they will treat a 150L tank 12-13 times. more economical than the flourish excel. Again more info re: flourish excel it kills the algae by blocking out the spectrum of light required for the algae to photosynthesise. hence killing the algae. (or at least that's what I was told).
  5. sounds like a good idea. I would prefer to do it legally, it's not worth getting snapped and fined and everything confiscated. especially considering I would probably release to the wild if he got too demanding. No interest in eating a snapper that I know where it has been. I prefer the unknown when it comes to eating fish.
  6. It still does not appear as if there has been any effect. shall I double dose?
  7. does anyone know what I would have to do in order to keep undersize snapper? Is there a possibility?
  8. I tried hydrogen peroxide (3%) a couple of days ago with no apparent effect other than some discolouration of the plant leaves. Has anyone used this method with good effect.
  9. chris, details about the breeder, and the different types off discus would be good thanks

    More hybrids

that's a cultural thing, and if Rolf Jansen wants to provide these fish to that market then good on him. I know very few people who have that sort of money to part with for a fish. The asian view is that red brings wealth (hence why they cost more) and the dragon brings luck. Rolf has to take into account his costs and whether the market is willing to buy. If he continues to do things like that we should see a larger number of exotic fish available, and hopefully the price will be more reasonable for our pockets.
  11. she doesn't believe that. She already knows that if a get a five foot my oscars will have a new home, and my four foot will become the discus tank. she already knows the cost of plants and discus so I imagine I'm out of luck with that suggestion. Keep the ideas coming
  12. You may find a glazier willing to make a tank for you, alternatively look in the T&E. I purchased a brand new 3' tank for fifty bucks. The quality wasn't incredibly fantastic but the price was. Apparently this guy advertises all the time and he is probably willing to make a tank to your specifications. his add went something like tank for sale with lid, no scratches. The only problem is that he is out west. The other option is to have a look at other tanks for sale in the t&E. Hopefully when you talk to the people they will be nice enough to give you an honest answer as to the condition. Good Luck
  13. I'd love to say I agree with you Ira, but it's not worth my life. Slowly i will accumulate all I need and more, and if I'm clever little by little and I might be allowed. Now any ideas on how to convince someone that a five foot tank is neccessary?
  14. i'm sure if you explain that you have fish, and that you are willing to show the customs people they won't need to put them through the x-ray machine. best bet would be to call ahead
  15. The gills and eyes don't really support this statement, but I noticed when my leopard danios bred the female looked like she had been eaten in her underbelly. that may be something to look at
  16. right here goes. 4' tank 2 red tiger oscars roughly 10" long 1 plecostomus (currently in brother in laws tank due to Oscars laying eggs) approx 12" long 3' tank (just recently set up) 2 bristlenoses 1 ottocinclus 2.5' tank ( to be transferred to 3' tank eventually) 6 clown loaches 2 pearl gouramis 3 panda corydoras 1 peppered corydoras 13 white cloud mountain minnows (10 adults 3 fry) 10 leopard danios (1 adult 9 fry) 5 half wedge harlequins 4 rummy noses 7 cardinals 2 pristellas 1 crown tail fighter. I think that is all. I would love more, but I have to focus more on marriage (october) than fish at the moment. however at a later date I will have a 4 or 5 foot tank with discus. but alas at the moment it is a long way off.

    CO2 levels

yep, I know that. the levels have now dropped to around 20, so I put a couple of bristlenoses and an ottocinclus in the tank. They seem to be alright. I guess i will find out later if they are not alright.

    CO2 levels

I presume it means mg/L. unfortunately I rather hurriedly looked at the website, and did not check all the finer details. Sorry about the delay in reply, my keyboard decided to go belly up
  19. wcmm don't tend to eat their fry. However I would be more worried that the catfish will eat the eggs, unless they are falling into plants, and then I agree with Caryl. The fighter will love the extra live food.

    CO2 levels

John, I used the scale on pauls website, I presume these are the same. If I can just highlight though in my first post I said I did not have fish in the tank, only daphnia, and I was waiting for the levels to drop before adding fish. the plants are growing well though in the current environment, and my amazon sword has sent up a flower stalk, so something must be alright for the plants.

    Help

sounds like a good explanation. I can see new shoots from the gravel so I presume the 'rainy season' is over in my tank.

    CO2 levels

Blue Ram, My technical set up is carbonated water from the sodastream plus a fermentation canister. I had the plants in the tank and thought I would boost up the CO2 level to encourage rapid growth. I tested the water today (pH and KH) and assessed the level at roughly 300ish. The plants seem to be loving it, and are giving off copious amounts of O2. This makes my tank a little more interesting to view. Theres only so much excitement you can get from a bare tank. BTW your sag is looking good, already sending up new leaves. Matt

    CO2 levels

can anyone tell me how long it takes CO2 to diffuse from the tank. My current level is about 300, I don't have any fish in the tank at the moment, and am wondering if anyone knows when this level will drop to a healthy level. BTW my daphnia that I threw in the tank seem to be loving it.
