Thanks for the info blue,
Its a definate case of nibbling as I saw it happening ! I knew it was a little risky to have them together...they have been in the tank for over a year anf no problems till now.. I have removed the gold fish and shall watch and wait I guess, poor axo I feel guilty ! He is a great specimen too , white albino ( my other is a gold albino )
Hi,
one of my gold fish found that my Axo's gills are tasty
Seems like they have been nibbled at fairly seriously, I am a bit concerned about his health.
Q - does anyone know if they will grow back ? or is it a doom and gloom situation?,
many thanks in advance for any help
Yea thanks - the tank is very very well cycled...months..good idea too wash the filter in some of the tank water - very helpful thanks.
And in regards to the gold fish - cant wait till my Axo's are big enough to eat them !
Hi - any pointers would be greatly appreciated as I am a bit green about filters etc..
I have two Axo's and two Gold fish and a couple of little "feeding stock" fishies in my tank ( 60cm/30x30), a few plastic plants etc...I also have a stingray type of filter running constantly - allowing it too "airate" the tank with a few bubbles etc as well.
My main concern is a fully cleaned the tank and its bits n bobs and 2-3 days later it seems very murky /dirty ... The filter inside the "stingray" is also dirty..do I replace this or clean it out?
I realise spot cleaning is required of poo and left over food etc - although I have not done this since the clean out I was surprised that my nice clean tank got so dirty so quickly !
thoughts ? advice?
Many thanks
Scraping it out like the islanders do is easiest - I use a vice with a rounded chisel held fast in it and run the coconut back and forth scraping the guts out.
haha thanks ! Yes he is a good size - still only 15cm though - about 10cm (ish) to go ! They are not yet mature... You can see faintly a bit of a shiny type of? on the gold one, she also has this on her tail and gill tips - this is my concern in regards too health..then again they have beem moved too a new home in a car etc since that photo, perhaps thats there dismay. The white/gray one also has a "wound" on his other side which I shall post up ! from a cat I think it is a single claw puncture - although its six weeks ol dnow so if he was going to die I guess he would have by now...
Yea hi - thanks for your reply...
my tank is the same size as yours..with a stingray filter- internal..I will get a decent pic up soon..temp seems ok - about 18-21 C , I have been feeding them earth worms, white worms ( both of which I farm/sell on trademe.) and little fishies. The only picture I have at the mo is this one - but its about 2 weeks old
Hi - I am a bit new too Axo's - I have two ( Jose & Cuervo) , how can I tell if they are happy or not ? I have read that if there "gills" are slanting forward a little it is a sighn of bad water flow..also that they may get a scaley sort of blemish on them if un-happy - both of which mine appear too have a little... I have plenty of web site's too read up on but several differ....
How much do they eat ? ( appx 12 and 15cm long)
Also how much "movement" is expected of them as mine seem too mull around and dont move alot
Many thanks too any 1st hand info
My two new ones - also from trademe - good score 70$ for the two, plus too gold fish, tank/filter the lot - great deal very happy
As far as breeding goes they do not have similarities with there parents - except that thay are Axo's..there dna/genes at fertilisation are unique - I cant explain it very well myself but check out here somewhere - good read http://www.axolotl.org/rearing.htm
enjoy !
Oh and I found the perfect food ! Live fish - I dont recall the the name of them - perhaps someone can help with this? The little fishies introduced too n.z that eat the mozzie larvae etc ? free too "nett" up at a local pond/lake side
Best thing for white worms is rice ( cooked ) and or bread, i just use the crust's - soaked in a little water ... they seem too breed up faster with the rice...
Live blood worms, I have been trying too get some, any pointers where too look? I grow white worms and microworms by the 1,000's, but I only seem to be able to find frozen blood worms help ! ( perhaps i am not looking in the right direction! )
